Campus Celebrity: Emily Mulcahey, ’16

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SBU chapter.

Celebrity: Emily Mulcahey

Year: Senior

Major: Sociology major, journalism minor

Hometown: Henniker, New Hampshire

Favorite Activities: Reading and writing, sports, hanging out with friends and family.

Her Campus: “What activities are you involved in at Bona’s?”

Emily Mulcahey: “I work in admissions in tele-recruiting, I am the president of the women’s rugby team and the opinion editor of the BV.”

HC: “The women’s rugby team is doing great this year, going to states! What is your team’s work ethic?”

EM: “We lost 14 seniors last year and only have four returning starters. At first it was looking like this would be a rebuilding year, so we kind of threw a team together with new players. I’m really surprised but so happy about how well we have done. I’ve never been on a team that is so close as we are this year. Everybody always comes to practice ready to play. It’s definitely going to be a fun team to go to states with this year.”

HC: “In my opinion, it takes a lot of guts to play rugby. What keeps you motivated on the field?”

EM: “I’ve always played contact sports, I used to play ice hockey. You know that you’re going out there to get beat up; it’s so physically tasking. But you know what you have to do and you’re prepared for it. You have 14 other people with you and you don’t want to let them down. All of the support comes from my teammates.”

HC: “What are some tips you would give to someone who is interested in playing?”

EM: “First to join, definitely. It’s fun and you’re probably going to be sore, but it’s just so worth it in the end. We had a whole season where we lost every single game we played, but I was still having the time of my life. It is a lot of work for a club sport, but it keeps me on schedule with school and what I need to do.”

HC: “What are your plans after graduation?”

EM: “I just got accepted into Canterbury, a teaching English abroad program in Madrid. You teach there for a year, so that’s what I hope to do. Overall, I definitely want to do some type of writing.”

HC:  “Who do you look up to?”

EM: “My dad. He’s always pushed to ‘do what you love first and money comes later.’ My dad coached every team and has always been with me through everything I do. He has such a positive outlook on the world; he’s the happiest person I know. It’s so refreshing to be around him.”

HC:  “What’s a fun fact about yourself?”

EM: “I shook Chuck Norris’ hand once.”

HC: “Favorite fall activity?”

EM: “Pretty much all of the Halloween stuff. I just went on a haunted hayride, so that was fun. We’re missing Halloween this year because we’ll be at states, but it’s totally okay.”
