Top Ways to Stay Healthy This School Year

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SAU chapter.

Being sick is not fun. Forget about a social life–being sick will put you behind in school and work. Developing healthy habits will make it easier in the future to live a healthy life. Here are some easy ways to stay healthy in college.

1. You Need Your Beauty Sleep
Remember as children we HATED taking naps and bedtime? Now these times of shut-eye are well cherished. The average college student should get around 7-9 hours of sleep a night. Not getting enough sleep can result in headaches, grogginess, weight gain, and don’t forget about crankiness. With enough sleep you will feel rested, healthy, and ready to take on a busy day.

2. Exercise
Exercising and staying in shape can make all the difference! It reduces stress and gives you endorphins that can make you feel great. Being in shape and looking your best helps you feel your best. Exercising is an excellent way to boost your self-esteem. Take advantage of Lee Lohman, where there is a weight room, cardio room, indoor track, and even fitness classes.

3. Don’t Freak Out: Stress
As a college student, stress is something that we all have to get used to. Between vigorous classes, a social life, and a part-time job it can be hard to stay sane. Try not to get too carried away with worry and stress. Take time out for you to read a book, chat with friends, or even take a hot bubble bath to de-stress.

4. Eating Well
Having a balanced diet in college is not an easy task. It sounds much more simple than it really is. College is a huge adjustment and it can be difficult eating healthy away from home. Try to always eat breakfast. This can include a quick granola bar or apple, which will give you the energy to start your day. Don’t skip meals, and THINK before you eat something. When you are conscience about what goes into your body and how it makes you feel, it can change your diet. Also, don’t forget to drink water and stay hydrated!

5. Partying
Let’s get real, partying in college is something students take very seriously-and why not? Being away from parents for the first time gives students a new sense of freedom that should be explored. But, it is important to party in moderation. Don’t let drinking and staying up until the AM become a bad habit that affects you negatively.

6. Be Informed
Not only should you keep up with your studies on campus, but stay informed about the latest health information and vaccines as well. St. Ambrose offers flu shots and health services to stay healthy during the school year. Nurse Nancy has a ton of information and is always willing to help.
