Life After Graduation: Let’s Talk Clothes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at SAU chapter.

One of the best things about working in the real world and having that “grown up” job is getting to dress up and wear cute clothes everyday. Maybe you’ve had the problem at school when you’ll wear nice clothes and everyone will ask “why are you dressed so nice?” Once you’re old like me you can wear your cute clothes everyday, and people don’t judge you!

In my day job, I have to wear business professional clothing. So pantyhose, dress shoes, nice sweaters, long skirts and dresses are what I eye when I’m out at the mall. It sometimes can be hard to find things that fit the appropriate dress code, but I like having a challenge when I’m out shopping so I can’t just settle and buy everything.  I save my money and only buy things I know I can actually wear!

I really like wearing skirts because they are comfortable and easy to wear. Then for tops, it’s really easy to find something that will make a cute outfit. Selecting the different patterns, textures and colors to wear make everyday a fun day to look forward to. Buying things that can go on in layers is a thing to pay attention to if you’re body temperature is never just right. I’m always cold so when I get dressed in the mornings I plan to wear a few different layers on top so when I get a hot flash I can take a bit off but still be modest and cute.

The one thing I’ve noticed in my work environment is we all tend to wear the same color patterns on certain days, without planning it. My favorite day was a Wednesday, “on Wednesday’s we wear pink”, and the entire office had a color scheme of pink, black and grey. And then the next day I noticed all the men had on white button up shirts, I don’t know how they do it.  I think they secretly planned that one.

I do miss wearing sweatpants, jeans and hoodies every day but as someone who growing up lived for days I got to dress up, I’m a-okay with this wardrobe change. When you’re ready to buy all your professional clothing go for the items that will set you apart from the crowd and reflect your personality. If you work in an environment where you deal with the public, you may get lots of compliments on how good you look. That always makes my day loads better!
