Prominent Feminist Gloria Steinmen makes anti-feminist remark

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at San Francisco chapter.

Well renowned feminist, Gloria Steinmen believes that women who support Bernie are only doing so because they want attention from boys. During an interview with Bill Maher, she made the statement:

“Women are more for Clinton than men are. Women get more radical as we get older…Not to over-generalize, but … men tend to get more conservative because they gain power as they age, women get more radical because they lose power as they age.

“And when you’re young, you’re thinking, where are the boys? The boys are with Bernie.”

As a young college woman, I found Steinmen’s remark to be disappointing.

The implication that women are not capable of making their own decisions is absolutely demeaning and rather insulting to our intelligence. The young women of today are not to be underestimated, we are informed, aware and active. We will support a candidate because we agree with their ideas, values and beliefs and not because we are eager for male attention.

The day after Steinmen’s interview, former secretary of state, Madeleine Albright, appeared at a rally with Clinton where she stated:

“We can tell our story about how we climbed the ladder, and a lot of you younger women don’t think you have to, it’s been done. It’s not done. … And just remember, there’s a special place in hell for women who don’t help each other.”

These controversial comments are raising the question of whether this Democratic campaign is becoming centered around ‘gender politics’.
