10 Reasons Why Bernie Sanders Should Not be our Next President!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at San Diego chapter.

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has captured the heart of millennials across the United States. If you are asking yourself why on earth the youth would fall prey to his dangerous, socialist ideas, don’t ask me. Here are ten reasons why Bernie Sanders should not be president!

1. His tax plan will not work!

Actually, Bernie enumerates exactly how he is going to pay for every one of his initiatives on his website. Check it out below:

Plus, leading economist Gerald Friedman believes that not only is Bernie’s plan do-able, it would cause our economy to soar. According to CNN:

“ Friedman… found that if Sanders became president – and was able to push his plan through Congress – median household income would be $82,200 by 2026, far higher than the $59,300 projected by the Congressional Budget Office.

In addition, poverty would plummet to a record low 6%, as opposed to the CBO’s forecast of 13.9%. The U.S. economy would grow by 5.3% per year, instead of 2.1%, and the nation’s $1.3 trillion deficit would turn into a large surplus by Sanders’ second term.”

2. There is no way that he could finance free college tuition!

According to berniesanders.com, Bernie wants to finance this $75 Billion a year plan “by imposing a tax of a fraction of a percent on Wall Street speculators who nearly destroyed the economy seven years ago. More than 1,000 economists have endorsed a tax on Wall Street speculation and today some 40 countries throughout the world have imposed a similar tax including Britain, Germany, France, Switzerland, and China.”

3. He’s a socialist!

Actually, Bernie is a democratic socialist. And that’s not just some name he came up with to keep Americans calm.

“So let me define for you, simply and straightforwardly, what democratic socialism means to me. It builds on what Franklin Delano Roosevelt said when he fought for guaranteed economic rights for all Americans. And it builds on what Martin Luther King, Jr. said in 1968 when he stated that; “This country has socialism for the rich, and rugged individualism for the poor.” It builds on the success of many other countries around the world that have done a far better job than we have in protecting the needs of their working families, the elderly, the children, the sick and the poor.

Democratic socialism means that we must create an economy that works for all, not just the very wealthy.

Democratic socialism means that we must reform a political system in America today which is not only grossly unfair but, in many respects, corrupt.”

“Democratic socialism means, that in a democratic, civilized society the wealthiest people and the largest corporations must pay their fair share of taxes. Yes. Innovation, entrepreneurship and business success should be rewarded. But greed for the sake of greed is not something that public policy should support. It is not acceptable that in a rigged economy in the last two years the wealthiest 15 Americans saw their wealth increase by $170 billion, more wealth than is owned by the bottom 130 million Americans. Let us not forget what Pope Francis has so elegantly stated; “We have created new idols. The worship of the golden calf of old has found a new and heartless image in the cult of money and the dictatorship of an economy which is faceless and lacking any truly humane goal.”

4. I’m going to have to pay 80% of my income in taxes!

Gif by GIPHY

Actually, no. According to Sanders’ website:

“The overall impact of this personal income tax plan would be to make sure that the wealthiest 2.1 percent of households in America pay their fair share.

This plan would replace the top three income tax rates (33%, 35%, and 39.6%) with more progressive rates:

37% on income between $250,000 and $500,000.

  1. 43% on income between $500,000 and $2 million.
  2. 48% on income between $2 million and $10 million. (In 2013, only 113,000 households, just 0.08 percent of all taxpayers, had income between $2 million and $10 million.)
  3. 52% on income of $10 million and above. (In 2013, only 13,000 households, just 0.01 percent of taxpayers, had income exceeding $10 million.)”

5. He’s too old!

Sanders will be 75 by the time he takes office, making him the oldest president yet. Is this seriously an issue, especially in this campaign?

We have candidates who have proclaimed ignorant, blanket statements about race and a candidate who is under investigation from the FBI. We have bigger things to worry about than how old Bernie Sanders is, like maybe the issues.

6. He only tries to appeal to young people!

Gif by GIPHY

Yes, Sanders pays attention to issues like student loan debt and the minimum wage. He has a twitter and a very informative, modern website. How is this a problem?

Young people in our country are typically not engaged in politics, and most candidates know this. Most candidates don’t try to get the young vote for this very reason.

But Sanders isn’t just trying to get the young vote, he wants to improve the lives of young people in our country. Horrible, right?

7. He doesn’t know anything about foreign policy!

Gif by GIPHY

No, Bernie doesn’t stand up in front of crowds and explain that he wants to carpet bomb Middle Eastern countries. But that doesn’t mean that he would not be a strong commander in chief.

In a statement released by Sanders, he stated:

“We live in a difficult and dangerous world, and there are no easy or magical solutions.  As President and Commander-in-Chief, I will defend this nation, its people, and America’s vital strategic interests, but I will do it responsibly. America must defend freedom at home and abroad, but we must seek diplomatic solutions before resorting to military action. While force must always be an option, war must be a last resort, not the first option.”

8. He might as well represent the Green Party, because climate change isn’t real!

Climate Change is about as real as Donald Trump’s hair is a real problem. It’s a problem that Sanders wants to solve.

9. He’s going to let the immigrants take my jobs!

Bernie doesn’t want to build a wall, but that doesn’t mean he wants to open our borders. Among other inititatives, Sanders wants to:

  • Redirect resources away from boondoggle walls to modernize our border and ensure proper oversight that protects border communities.
  • Dismantle inhumane deportation programs and private detention centers.
  • Reject “The Great Sanctuary City Slander” as the politics of fear, and support humane local and state laws that integrate immigrants to our society.

10. He will never win!

Gif by GIPHY

According to realclearpolitics.com, Sanders beats every Republican in a general election match up. Sounds like a loser to me!

Clearly, Bernie Sanders is entirely unelectable. Hopefully a better candidate will win the election!
