Love Should Never Be Bought: Why Valentine’s Day Has Become the Worst Holiday Ever

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Sacred Heart chapter.

I’m not a Valentine’s Day hater.  This isn’t going to be one continuous Valentine’s Day bash. I’m not a singleton who wants to light all long stemmed red roses on fire.

It’s a dreaded holiday for some while others pray their loves ones won’t forget or screw up.  Hopefully they’ll be waiting for them on the doorstep with a dozen red roses, chocolates, stuffed animal, or even for those big spenders and lucky girls, some diamonds.

I’m here to say that I think Valentine’s Day is the worst holiday in the history of ever.  Not because it was originally created for dear Saint Valentine, but for the sad fact that it has turned into a consumer driven Hallmark loving holiday.  Exploitation of love and relationships at its finest.

Besides all of these total annoying nuances that tend to circulate the world on this one holiday of the year, the most romantic holiday out of the 365 days, the most absurd part is what it’s meaning has become.

Valentine’s day has morphed into an excuse for couples…

An excuse to be romantic one day out of the 365.  One blessed day where guys buy that perfect Hallmark card with the sappy poem and girls gush over it.  All of the other days that a guy or girl may have screwed up, this one day makes up for it, this one day of pure romantic gestures and perfect love. Well that is completely and utterly terrible in my opinion.

Yes call me a hater of love, call me whatever you may think, but how ridiculous that we allow this whole idea of their being only one day where we act truly loving and romantic to one another?  No matter how horrible we may act towards each other throughout the rest of the year this one day is penance for that and it all comes down to the amount of chocolate or roses purchased.

Love should never be bought.  It should be shown and felt every day.  Not just one day.  We’ve given this one day so much power and for what?  To add fuel to this consumer holiday.  It’s empty and you’re relationship should be anything but empty.

Now I’m not telling you to stop celebrating Valentine’s Day.  That’s not what I’m saying at all.  What I’m saying is celebrate love more than just on Valentine’s Day!

Celebrate loving one another every day, don’t reserve it for one day.  For you singletons out there, get in touch with yourself and celebrate the awesomeness that is you. Having the confidence to love yourself should be a celebration. So let everyday be Valentine’s Day.

The real Valentine’s Day.
