How To Be Your Best Beyoncé

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Sacred Heart chapter.

BOW DOWN B*TCHES. Just yesterday was the Queen’s birthday. No, no, not Kate Middleton– we are referring to Beyoncè. Let’s be honest, if America could make Beyoncé president, we would. Queen B is a major influence on girls of ALL ages. She is everything we aspire to be: bold, beautiful, independent and confident. So how can you be your best Beyoncé? No one can answer that question better than the queen herself. Check out these inspiring song lyrics and reach queen status!

1. “You wake up, flawless. Post up, flawless…I woke up like this. We flawless, ladies tell ’em…” (Flawless)

Beyoncé screams confidence, and she expects you to do the same. You are beautiful, but you must believe you are beautiful before you can wear the crown. Know your worth and, more importantly, be yourself— wake up knowing you’re already flawless.

2. “Depend on no one else to give you what you want.” (Independent Woman)

Strive to be independent like B. Pursue your dreams and succeed. This should be the anthem for all of us college women with big aspriations– don’t plan on depending on a man.

3. “I’m a grown woman. I can do whatever I want.” (Grown Woman)

Find your passion! Our girl B has many talents. She sings, writes songs, she acts, and she dances…all while being a mother (Beyoncé if you are reading this I am willing to have you adopt me). Although Beyoncé found her talents at a young age, it is never too late to find yours. Whatever it is that makes you happy in life, pursue it. Don’t listen to others’ opinions reagarding what you “should” do– it’s your life. Not their’s. For me, it’s dancing, and you better believe I channel my inner Beyoncé once I hit that stage.

4. “We run the world? Girls.” (Girls Who Run The World)

Be the boss. Don’t be afraid to take charge. Oh, you’re a girl? You have the ability to RUN the world (or, okay, maybe just kick a** in that important meeting you have this Monday). Whatever it is, demand respect because, well, you deserve it.

That look demands attention. Don’t worry B, we can’t take our eyes off you.

5. “We teach girls to shrink themselves, to make themselves smaller…Because I am female I am expected to aspire to marriage. I am expected to make my life choices always keeping in mind that marriage is the most important…but why do we teach girls to aspire to marriage and we don’t teach boys the same? We raise girls to see each other as competitors–not for jobs or for accomplishments, which I think can be a good thing, but for the attention of men. We teach girls that they cannot be sexual beings in the way that boys are. Feminist: the person who believes in the social, political, and economic equality of the sexes.” (Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, Flawless)

Speak your mind. In the second verse of her hit single, Flawless, Beyoncé chooses to include feminist writer and speaker Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. This verse is extremely powerful. It teaches girls to stand up for what they believe in– it teaches them that they have the power to make a difference in this world. Beyoncé clearly isn’t afraid to share her personal opinion with the world, so why should we be?

“I don’t have to prove anything to anyone, I only have to follow my heart and concentrate on what I want to say to the world. I run my world.” –Beyoncé Knowles

Spoken like a true Queen!

Call her Beyonce she will answer! Jenille is a senior at Sacred Heart University struggling to fight senioritis. She hates long walks on the beach but if you tell her that there is food involved she will totally come. In her free time she loves to dance and to call cute babies "Little Baby Nuggets!"
