Campus Celebrity: Kevin Barry

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Sacred Heart chapter.

Name: Kevin Barry

Nickname: “KB”

Major: Marketing

Minor: Sports Management

Hometown: River Edge, NJ

High School: River Dell High School

Jersey Number: 42

Kevin Barry played football, basketball, and lacrosse in high school. He was also a member of his high school’s track and field team. Moreover, he was captain of his high school football and lacrosse team for two years! Kevin now plays middle linebacker for SHU’s varsity football team, two-time NEC Champions. He has definitely upheld his leadership abilities through college because he has been designated as captain of Sacred Heart’s football team as just a sophomore. Congrats, Kevin! We cannot wait to see what the fall season will bring.

NA: Congratulations on becoming Sacred Heart’s captain of the football team! It is a remarkable achievement, especially since you’re only a sophomore. This must be so exciting for you! How do you feel knowing you earned the title of captain?

KB:  Thank you! Yes, it is very exciting, I feel very honored and accomplished to hold the title of captain.

NA: As you should! How do you think your teammates feel about this achievement?

KB: I hope they feel good about it all, especially since this does not change the fact that we are all teammates.

NA: That’s good. How are you handling the added responsibility of now having both a position as middle linebacker and a responsibility as captain?

KB: So far, it has not settled in or hit me entirely, but I hope I will be a successful leader/captain for my team come summer training and the fall season.

NA: As a captain, what are your roles/responsibilities?

KB: Along with being a member of the team, my responsibilities are to lead the team, keep the team in line and make sure they’re doing what they’re supposed to be doing. During the season, we have workouts and meetings four times a week, along with a game on Saturday. We also have a 48 hour rule during the season which means no one is allowed to go out the Thursday or Friday prior to game day. As captain, I need to ensure the team abides by this rule so that they show up Saturday ready to play.

NA: Very true! Who were the former captains of your team and will you follow in their footsteps or take a different path?

KB:  The former captains were Gordon Hill, Andrew Brigley, Keshaudus Spence, and Connor Candito. They did a great job as captains and I hope I can as well. I will keep their leadership roles in mind, but I will also try to take a new path while leading the team. As one of the captains of the team, I hope to three-peat and win another NEC Championship!

NA: What goal(s) do you have for yourself next year both as a captain and as a player?

KB: As team captain, I want to be a fantastic leader. Even when things aren’t going our way, I plan to lead by example. As a player, my goal is to do whatever I can to help my team succeed.

NA: You guys have won the NEC Championship two years in a row now! What goal(s) do you have for the team as a whole?

KB: I want to go 1-0 every Saturday or, in other words, take each game one at a time. Overall, I want to work toward winning a third NEC Championship, as well as earning another shot at the playoffs.

NA: Sounds like the team is in great hands. You and the other captains seem to be off to a great start. HC Sacred Heart wishes you and your team the best of luck in the season to come! Congratulations!
