1. Allen Gardens Conservatory
This botanical garden is a historic landmark that is only a five minute walk from campus and is a major tourist attraction in downtown Toronto. It’s open every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is the perfect place to relax and take a breather in between classes. Experience an exotic collection of plants from around the world and get in touch with nature without spending a dime.
2. Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada
During the winter examination period, a great stress reliever and inspiration booster is diving into an underwater adventure. Get up close and personal with over 16,000 aquatic animals for only $15! While general admission tickets usually cost $30 throughout the year, Ripley’s Aquarium presents post-secondary students with a 50% discount mid-December.
3. The Royal Ontario Museum
If you’re interested in history and culture, be sure not to miss out on visiting the ROM while the summer promotion is still intact. Student admission tickets are currently only $9 on Friday evenings which makes for the perfect evening to enjoy some quiet time alone.
4. The Scarborough Bluffs
For the adventure-seekers out there, the Scarborough Bluffs Park offers a great chance at hiking and cliff climbing. Although it takes quite the subway ride to reach the destination, entrance to the parks is completely free and sure to bring about the thrill in you. P.S. It also makes for stunning Instagram pictures!
5. Kensington Market
Located in the heart of downtown Toronto, Kensington Market is less than a 30 minute walk from campus and showcases the most vibrant and diverse cultures in Toronto. It includes various eateries, vintage clothing shops and entertainment for an affordable price.
6. Toronto Islands
Centre Island is a must-see destination for any Torontonian. With just a 15 minute walk from campus; students get to enjoy the ferry ride for only about $3. The islands itself consist of the Centreville amusement park, various beaches (including a nude beach), the pier, corn mazes and much more. Make sure to stop by at Ward’s Island and Hanlan’s Point to get the full Toronto Island experience.
7. The Art Gallery of Canada
Only a 15 minute walk away, the AGO is the perfect place for all art lovers. With student tickets being only $11, the galleries are definitely worth a visit (especially the Jean-Michel Basquiat exhibit!).
8. High Park
While High Park is known for its famous Japanese cherry blossoms in the month of May, it also has a lot to admire throughout the year. This is Toronto’s largest public park that features various hiking trails, a lakefront, a small museum and even a zoo. It’s the perfect picnic spot to hang out with your friends and also get your adrenalin going.
9. The Distillery Historic District
If you’re into fashion, the Distillery District carries some of the hottest designer boutiques in Canada. This pedestrian-only village is a 30 minute walk from campus and definitely a place worth exploring. It is also the home to Toronto’s famous Christmas Market and features various antique shops, art galleries and remarkable cafes.
10. Woodbine Beach
This is the largest beach amongst the four beaches in Toronto. Whether you enjoy swimming in the clear waters or simply sun tanning after a long week at school, this is the perfect ending to a hot day. But, be sure to hurry before winter starts!
