If you looked up the definition of “well-rounded”, you might find a picture of Steven. Involved in many organizations, focused on academics, and ambitious about his future, he really knows how to make the most of his time at Rutgers.

1. You’re pretty involved on campus. What are all of the clubs/organizations you’re involved in?
Musically, I’m involved in both the Rutgers Glee Club and the RU Kirkpatrick Choir.  The Glee Club is a men’s chorus of approximately 60 guys of a variety of majors who all love to sing.  The Kirkpatrick Choir is mixed choir made up of primarily music majors, and we sing a variety of high-level choral repertoire.  I’m going to be in the Livingston Theatre Company’s production of Urinetown in April as a cast member which is really exciting.  I’m also a regular participant of the Rutgers Yoga & Reiki Club, and I’m on the Rutgers Obstacle Course Racing Team as well.

2. Which one is your favorite?
My favorite activity is the Kirkpatrick Choir.  Music is an integral part of who I am and participating in a group that sings at national conferences is a really amazing experience that I’m blessed to have.  I grow and leave a stronger performer after every rehearsal, and that’s really important to me.

3. How do you maintain a balance of academics and other commitments?
I use a Google Calendar and the Notes app on my phone all the time.  Having all of my events and appointments in one place allows me to make sure that nothing conflicts.  I make To-do lists for music, homework, general life stuff, really whatever’s going on so that I don’t forget anything.  Most importantly I make sure I always get 7-8 hours of sleep so that I stay healthy, and I can be 100% engaged whether I’m in class, rehearsal, or practice.

4. What’s your favorite spot on campus?
My favorite spot on campus is Boyd Park.  I have practice there on Friday mornings with the OCR team and it’s beautiful to see the sun
rise when you’re running alongside the Raritan.  It’s a very serene and pretty area to visit in the morning.

5. How would you describe your time at Rutgers so far?
Diverse.  My goal when I came here was to maintain my interests in music and academics, but also branch out to things I’ve never tried before.  I’ve never been an athlete nor was I very concerned with mental health in the past.  But now I’m training for obstacle course races and I have a regular yoga practice.  Exploring areas of myself that I’ve never looked into before have made my time here really valuable and enjoyable thus far.

6. Name one goal you hope to accomplish during your time here.
I hope to run a marathon by the time I graduate.  In high school I never dreamed of being that kind of person, but I found out that I really enjoy running when I got here.  So before I leave Rutgers, I would love to complete at least one marathon.
