Avoid the V-day Blues!

Updated Published
This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rutgers chapter.

If you’re like me, you hate the month of February. It gives us Ground Hog’s day and the fear of having six more weeks of pale skin, but that’s not what the dreadful month is usually synonymous with. Chocolate and sappy movie producing companies alike all make their killing during the first 14 days.

Valentine’s Day has the tendency to get a lot of single girls bummed, but the real question is: Why let one day of the whole year let you down? Cheer up ladies!  Take these five simple steps to ensure that even though you may be not have a date for February 14, you can still enjoy the holiday!

1.  Know you’re not the only one single. News flash ladies: there are other singles out there! I don’t suggest sitting in your PJs all day, crying about how your the only one out there who will never get married. Chances are, there are three or four of your closest friends in the same situation. Take pride in knowing that you’re not alone. So get off your butt and take the next step…

2.  Go out! Boys come and go, but your friends are forever. The best cure is finding as many of your close friends as possible and hitting the town! Go out to dinner, go out to see a movie, and buy each other flowers and chocolate. This is precious time you can spend with your friends. Don’t let a boy bring you to lose it! Now that you’re off the couch and have plans…

3.  Look Fabulous! Put on that hot dress, show off those curves! If anything, you’ll land yourself a man for next Valentine’s day! For me, fabulous is a pair of skin tight jeans, a hot shirt, and a pair of fire-red high heels. Do what you do best and keep it sexy! Congrats, you now have a night planned, an outfit, and a great attitude, so what’s the next step?

4. Don’t dwell on the past. So you may have met the love of your life last year who is now someone else’s love of their life, but don’t let that stop you. He missed out. Remember ladies, every princess has her prince, but not every princess has a quick fairy tale ending. Use your college years as an experience to have fun, and live it up. Who cares about the past? If anything, the past is just a bunch of funny stories to share at dinner with your best single ladies! And at the end of the day, when the gals are gone and you’re starting to feel alone again…

5.  Call the greatest man in your life. When I’m down and need someone to comfort me, I know there’s one person who gets the job done: my dad. He is the number one man in my life and my valentine forever. Don’t forget, no matter how many boyfriends you have, there will always be a man who trumps him. Whether it be a dad, uncle, grandpa, or brother, there’s always a special man with a special spot in your heart, who always knows just what to do and say to remind you that their are great men out there.

So ladies, there you have it. Those are my five tips on what to do to get rid of the disease known as the Valentine’s Day blues. I hope all of your February 14ths are fun and vibrant and filled with laughs. And, just so you know, I won’t tell if you indulge in a little V-day chocolate….it is the best medicine after all.
