How to Live Out Your Gilmore Girls Fall

As of September 23, it is officially autumn, or as I like to call it, Gilmore Girls Season. The perfect time to rewatch the perfect show, which turns 22 this year. It just never gets old, no matter how many times you’ve seen it. For those of you who haven’t already seen it (go get your Netflix queued up RIGHT NOW), Gilmore Girls follows mom and daughter Lorelai and Rory Gilmore as they navigate relationships with friends, family, and romantic interests. It’s funny, sweet, relatable, and incredibly binge-able.

There’s just something so quintessentially FALL about this show. It makes you wish you could dive right through the screen into the middle of the Stars Hollow Autumn Festival. While I can’t teach you how to do that, I can show you how to live out your very own Gilmore Girls fall right in your hometown. Stars Hollow is a mindset, not just a place. The first step, of course, is rewatching the series.

Next, you’ll need to dress the part. So whether you’re more like Lorelai or Rory, here’s how you can dress like you’re a Gilmore:

  • Rory, when she’s not in her Chilton uniform, can be found rocking lots of denim and corduroy. Her style includes cozy cable knit sweaters and sweet cardigans, perfect for chilly fall days. Mix in some tweed and argyle to fully achieve Rory’s preppy borderline business casual style.
  • Lorelai, on the other hand, boasts a more eccentric style. She is always dressed to the epitome of professionalism at the inn. Still, off-duty, we see her in fun patterns like tie-dye or camo. She loves a layered t-shirt look and knows how to wear a bandana (never a bad hair day for this girl!).

All of these looks can be replicated with thrift store finds, great not only for your budget but also the environment. Get creative with your look; you don’t need to be strictly Lorelai or strictly Rory. The Gilmore fashion gene is clearly strong; you just can’t go wrong!

Now that you’ve got the look, you’ve got to act like a Gilmore too. No one is more obsessed with coffee than Lorelai and Rory. Now it may not be Luke’s Diner, but here are the perfect fall drinks to sip while you binge the series:

  • First on the list is obviously the classic Pumpkin Spice Latte from Starbucks. It just doesn’t get any more fall than that.
  • Now, if you’re looking for a fall drink that doesn’t taste like a candle (no shade to all the PSL lovers), Dunkin’s new Nutty Pumpkin coffee is a more subtle alternative.
  • While a chai latte is not coffee and really it’s a year-round drink, my fall isn’t complete without it. Keep it classic, or opt for a fun pumpkin twist!

If you’re looking for that authentic Luke’s Diner feel, check out your local coffee shops and see what fall drinks they’re brewing up.

Now that you’re basically the third Gilmore Girl, you’re ready to conquer this fall season. Study hard like Rory, but Lorelai wouldn’t want you to forget to have some fun too!

Samantha Cavallo is in her third year as a writer for Her Campus. She enjoys writing about anything and everything, though her pieces often focus on celebrities and pop culture or mental health and wellbeing. Sam is currently a junior at Rollins College in Winter Park, FL, majoring in Psychology with a minor in Sociology, and she is from Langhorne, Pennsylvania. After earning her Bachelor's degree, she plans to pursue a PhD in School Psychology. Beyond Her Campus, she is involved in many organizations on campus that focus on supporting the campus community, such as the Wellness Ambassadors, where she works in Health Promotions to promote the Nine Dimensions of Wellness, and the Student Support Foundation, operating the campus food pantry and providing emergency grants to students, faculty, and staff in need. In her free time, Sam enjoys reading, going to Barre class, finding new things to do in and around the Orlando area, especially if there is rumored to be good food, and Facetiming her dog Dexter. She is a major fan of both Taylor Swift and Phoebe Bridgers (she even got it tattooed to prove it) and loves going to concerts, and of course dressing up for them.
