Every Woman: Popularity & Jealousy

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Rider chapter.
Did you ever secretly despise someone for being too sociable, too smart, more athletic, prettier than you, more popular than you or to phrase it “she’s got it all brains, brawn, and beauty”. Did you ever once consider how hard she has to work to achieve all of this: social status, beauty, and smarts?

This is the beauty of college you don’t have to be a part of the “in crowd” to make friends and have fun. You’re bound to meet other people who share your interests. Despite this being true, that popularity isn’t as important in college as it was high school is FALSE. Especially at our campus it’s so small that it’s similar to a high school which has its advantages and disadvantages; academically this is a plus not so much for a SOCIAL LIFE. Due to the size of the campus it’s easy for rumors and people’s personal lives to circulate throughout the campus. For example, in a matter of days you know when someone is talking or whose sleeping with whom etc., but what do you believe when an unknown virgin loses her virginity? Automatically, the young ladies reputation isn’t pure, she no longer receives the praise and prude jokes for being a virgin, but now she’s expected to be experienced and assumed to have a few partners.

That’s the humorous thing about popularity we envy others without even knowing their backgrounds. We automatically assume a girl who’s friends with most boys is promiscuous and is probably sleeping with all of them. We ignorantly overlook the possibility that maybe she just converses with these boys or gets along with the opposite sex better than the same sex. Some boys tend to suspect that just because how a girl has a curvaceous figure and how she talks, she’s not a virgin and “down for whatever”. Just in general, as a society, we have skewed perceptions on how someone gains popularity either they sleep their way to the top or work hard for it.
Did you ever just think about maybe this person you despise for “having it all”, didn’t ask for any of this not the sex appeal, good grades, the great social skills, athletic quality, or the POPULARITY, it just happened?
