I remember that it hurt

Watching her hurt

Her sweet smile hiding away years of pain

Time washing and scrubbing years of innocence and vulnerability

Why is life so cruel to the meek? To the people that meant no harm.

My first memory of the event is fuzzy around the edges;

I remember the fear plastered on my family’s faces

Will she make it till tomorrow? Will she make it today?

The way she tossed and turned in pain; no one really knowing the momentous amount of pain she was in…

As she closed her eyes all she could say, “Mi nietesita, Voy a estar bien.”

How could she leave me? How was that ok? Now I lay myself to sleep hoping I make her proud someday.
