Running My Own Jewelry Business

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Regent chapter.

Today I am talking about The Pink Rose. What is The Pink Rose I might ask? The Pink Rose is my jewelry store. I have been making jewelry since I was in the 4th grade. I remember my best friend at the time got me an ultimate jewelry kit. It had beads galore and I’ve been beading ever since. It’s become my favorite hobby and my most profitable one.

When I was in the 5th grade, my mom signed me up for my church’s flee market. People signed up to sell any and everything. I made a lot of jewelry, set up a table, and bam: I had a jewelry store. To my surprise lots of people bought jewelry and I made over a hundred dollars which. to a 10-year-old, felt more like a thousand dollars. I did the flee market for the next five years. I took the store online so I could expand my network. Since then I have sold products to people all over the US all the way to Washington State. It’s been such a great ride. I love having my own store.

However, running a business is hard work. There’s no getting around that. When you look at the great business owners online (I follow a few for inspiration), they make it look so easy and simple. They make it seem like you post one picture then thousands of people buy your product and then you go home and swim in money. Well in case you didn’t know, that’s not what happens. Running a business requires a lot of hard work and persistence.

One of the first and, I would argue, the most important things you have to do is research. Because there are so many different businesses on the market and your idea probably isn’t entirely original, you have to research your business idea and your target market. You will spend hours looking online (Pinterest has a great collection of resources for businesses) for various things involved in your business. Luckily, I love doing research, so I don’t mind. I still do research now because you will never be finished learning about your business. The other important aspect of running a business is persistence. There will be lots of times when you will want to give up, but you HAVE to keep going. Despite what you see on Instagram and YouTube, success does not happen overnight. Success happens when you work consistently over time. I saw post a while ago that said “Don’t give up. You could be working consistently for 4 years and then your 5th year is your year.” I hold onto that because like every business there are seasons where the business isn’t doing too hot and you can get discouraged. But never fear, it’s just a season and it will be over.

I sell handmade beaded jewelry and wholesale jewelry. I have a Wanderlust collection where I sell travel themed jewelry ie. a continent map necklace and airplane earrings. One of my favorite pieces is my cute mermaid tail necklaces. As a mermaid lover, these necklaces just add a pop to your outfit. My handmade jewelry is unique and all of my jewelry has a minimalistic feel to it.  If you want to check out my jewelry you can visit my site www.shopthepinkrose.com and follow the page on Instagram @shopthepinkrose.
