How To Accessorize Your Dresses This Dressember

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Regent chapter.

It’s that time of year again…Dressember! And with Dressember comes many, many (many) dresses! And with many dresses comes the issue of how to find new ways to wear those dresses so that you don’t start to feel like you’re back in high school and wearing the same drab outfit every day! Here are a few ideas on how to accessorize your dresses to keep your outfits fresh and fit for a variety of occasions:

1. Dress Up With Statement Jewelry

Statement jewelry, when paired with the right outerwear and shoes, can turn a casual skater dress or sundress into a completely different type of outfit. A chunky necklace in bright colors can add a touch of personality and be just the thing to turn a simple skater dress into the perfect outfit for brunch, church events, or family reunions. Statement necklaces in neutral colors or a metal can make an outfit more business casual and appropriate for interviews, other business events, and evening dates.

2. Dress Down With Casual Footwear

Of course, life isn’t all fancy dinners and church services. Sometimes, you have to lace up your shoes and run after whatever you need to chase, whether it be your dreams or the bus. This is where casual footwear comes in handy! You can throw your favorite Chucks or Nikes on under a cute dress (maybe pair it with a hardy denim jacket too) and be ready to run out the door in less time than it might have taken you to shimmy into your skinny jeans. Of course, if you are going to on the go in a dress, make sure it’s long enough or protect yourself (and others around you!) from accidental flashing with some safety shorts!

3. Break It Up By Layering With A Skirt

When you get into Dressember proper, you may be pretty darn sick of just wearing a dress all the time. This is when you need to put your layering skills to work! By layering a skirt of your choice over the dress, not only are you giving yourself an extra layer for warmth, but you’re also cutting up the monotony of wearing essentially the same outfit over and over again. So, instead of wearing a black dress every Wednesday, now you can wear a black blouse with a nice plaid skirt, all while still wearing the black dress.

4. Break It Up By Layering With A Sweater

The skirt is a layer for the bottom half, but how about the top half? Layering a sweater has essentially the same effect as layering with a skirt, except that you’ll probably be warmer in your sweater. This look breaks up the monotonous silhouette of a dress every day and gives you the chance to play around with more colors, knits, patterns, and whatever else you can fit on a sweater.

5. Keep Warm By Adding A Scarf And Jacket

This is one of my favorite and most used tips since my denim jacket is basically a second skin to me at this point. Adding a jacket or blazer to a dress can totally change the feel of it. You could put on an embroidered denim jacket covered in patches and pins to keep a look casual and fun, or you can add a blazer to make yourself look more professional. Also, a scarf can do wonders here too! A good warm plaid or a soft white scarf can really change the feel of an outfit and emphasize different colors or color palettes.

Well, that’s all I have! Hopefully, you learned something and can now go forth and Dressember!
