Word from the Wise: Freshman Do’s and Don’ts

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Quinnipiac chapter.

To the freshman ladies:
We know this is a very anxious and nerve-racking time being the first week of your college experience. Whether it is being able to find your classes or branching out to make new friends, Her Campus has some words of advice for you new comers.

1.     College is not high school. You don’t have five minutes to get to class before the bell rings. Quinnipiac may have a small campus at first, but some buildings are a good hike from the dorms. The College of Arts and Sciences (CAS) is the farthest of all of the classroom buildings so you should allow as much as 10-15 minutes to get there. Do leave enough time to get to class.

2.     Even though the guy may look all sweet and nice in the darkness of the very hoppin’ club, Toad’s Place, in New Haven; you should never get the guy’s number or give out your own. Dance it up with your girlfriends, maybe hook up with a guy, but don’t give out your digits.

3.     At first meeting, your roommate may appear to end up being one of your best friends, but things happen and appearances are not always what they seem. When your Resident Assistant (RA) goes over your Roommate Contract with you, pay attention and speak up if you don’t agree with something. Do take your Roommate Contract seriously.

4.     Although it may seem like a good idea at first, deciding to stay over at your new guy friends’ room and sleepover may not be the smartest one. Waking up early to not get caught leaving could work, but people are always awake on the Quinnipiac Campus. The “walk of shame” is not a “walk of fame.”

5.     You could have been ridiculously involved in high school, but that doesn’t mean it’ll be that easy in college. There are tons of different clubs and organizations to try out and see where your niche is. Do go to the Involvement Fair on campus and break out of your shell!

6.     When living at home you may be used to shutting the door to get privacy from your parents. Here at school it is a good idea to keep your dorm door open. People walk by constantly and may come in to chit chat. Do keep your dorm open…who knows, your new BFF may walk through it.

College can be a difficult adjustment, but if you follow some of these simple words to live by and you’ll have the best college experience.
