Top 6 Dating Dealbreakers

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Quinnipiac chapter.

Most collegiettes have a list of deal breakers when it comes to dating. These deal breakers are the things that irritate us and result in her ending her relationship with that guy, whether it was a hook up buddy or a long term romance. In my opinion, deal breakers in the dating world are the best way to weed out the losers and get closer to your prince charming, for lack of a better word. Here are my top non-negotiable deal breakers.

1. Doesn’t like animals.

OK, first of all, whether you are male or female, if you don’t like animals, you must not have a soul. As you all know, I have two dogs at home whom I love so very much. If a guy I were to potentially date didn’t like them, then he’d be out of the picture. Also, if my dogs don’t like him, then that’s also a no. Call me obsessed with dogs, I don’t care!

2. Rude to parents/family

Your parents and your family are the ones who will be there for you no matter what. They give you so much love and support. If a potential boyfriend responds to that love and support with rudeness or hostility, then I will be immediately turned off. I’m very close with my family and while at times they annoy me, I know it’s only because they love me.

3. Bad breath

Alright, having bad breath is disgusting. Please do something about it if you have it, boys. No girl will want to kiss you if your breath smells gross. Brush your teeth before seeing your girl, or pop in a piece of gum, do something about it PLEASE. I’m sure I’m not the only one who considers this such a huge turn off.

4. No Motivation

While it is difficult to know what you want to do in life – I’m going through that struggle right now, as are many undergraduate collegiettes – having some degree of motivation is key. If a guy just sits at home and plays X box and drinks with the guys all the time, it shows that he’s lazy, immature, and not motivated. Either get to the gym or hit the books, guys.

5. Temper Tantrums

At this point in your life, you should be able to control your anger in a mature way, gentlemen. If a guy gets easily mad over something like not being able to find his keys or wallet, my attraction for him decreases significantly. Take a deep breath, count to ten, and think like an adult.

6. Mean to my friends

Besides my family and my dogs, my friends are quite important to me. If a guy I’m dating is vulgar or impolite to my friends, then it’s a no for me. Also, if my friends don’t approve of him, that also plays a major role in determining whether or not I date him. Besides, if I did end up dating him and we broke up, I’ll always have my friends.

Remember girls, boys will come and go out of your life. You will weed out the ones who are jerks (and who comply with your deal breakers) but then hopefully some day you will meet a really nice guy who, despite his annoying quirks, will love and respect you, your family and friends (human and furry alike!).
