Spring Forward: How One Bobcat Cleans and Organizes

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Quinnipiac chapter.

Despite the snow we had last weekend, it is technically spring!  With spring comes rain, flowers, outdoor concerts, the smell of fresh cut grass, and perhaps my favorite part of the season, spring cleaning!

There are so many things collected and put aside throughout the year that it just becomes too much to handle come spring season.  I use spring as my time to purge pretty much all things in my life.

The first thing I clean out is my clothing, of course.  I have way too many clothes, and by spring, the shopping from the year has accumulated, and I barely have room for anything anymore.  What I do first is go through my clothes.  I decide what I want to keep and what I don’t.  If I haven’t worn it in over a year, it gets donated (or handed down to my little cousins).  If it has any holes or rips that I can’t sew, in the garbage it goes.  Sometimes it’s a little painful parting with dearly beloved shirts and old comfy pants, but once you cut ties, it feels good to minimize!

Next, I go to my shoes and pretty much do the same as I did for clothing.  Then I proceed to rip through my underwear, bras, socks, pajamas, hats, gloves and scarves.  I go a little crazy once I get started.  Sometimes I’ll even do jewelry, lotions, perfumes, hair clips, nail polishes, brushes and makeup.  Once I get started, it’s hard to stop!

Now that my closet is nice and stripped of all necessary items, I organize it along with everything else I went through.  For this part, you can really organize any way you see fit, whether it’s by color, style, brand, size or type.  My closet is organized by color and style; my shoes by color; and everything else is just tidied up.

Then comes the actual cleaning part.  I go a little crazy here; you don’t have to go to the extent I do, but when I do my spring cleaning, everything gets cleaned.  I wash all of my sheets, pillow cases, comforters, pillows, stuffed animals, blankets and any other bedding items.  I vacuum and sweep and Swiffer everything, too.  Clorox wipes become my best friends, and every surface is disinfected.  I even clean my hairbrushes and makeup brushes.  I then top everything off with a spray of air freshener to make it all complete.

Finally, collegiettes, since you’re already cleaning everything else, you might as well purge your life of any people who are bringing you down.  You don’t need anyone negative in your new clean life; it’s like a clean slate.  Now is as good a time as any to exhale the bad and inhale the good!

To top off all of your hard work, you may even want to make a new plan for yourself– maybe a “new season, new you” kind of resolution.  Make a plan to be more organized, go to the gym, or procrastinate less.  If you didn’t do it for the new year, maybe it’s time to do it for the new season.

So, go forth, collegiettes– clean and organize!  It may be time consuming and maybe even a little tedious, but it’s also beyond rewarding by the time you’re done.  You won’t believe how together your life feels afterward.  Happy cleaning to you all!
