Give Your Roommate The Birthday She Deserves

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Quinnipiac chapter.

Your roommate’s birthday is fast approaching and you are wondering if you should do
something special. The answer is always YES! If you are friends with your roommate (in most
cases, best friends) then it is a mandatory job for you to celebrate her birthday the way it’s
supposed to be celebrated.
Even if she doesn’t talk about her birthday that much, that doesn’t mean she isn’t thinking
about it! What girl really wants to downplay her birthday? None that I know, that’s for sure. A
girl’s birthday is the only day in the year where it is 100% all about her. She is supposed to feel
special and everyone around her is supposed to make sure she is having a great time on her special
day. This is the one day of the year where it is ok for a girl to actively be selfish and make it all
about her.
Obviously, you know your roommate better than I do, but the following are a few
suggestions of things to do for her:

1. Surprise Birthday Party:
Find a time when your roommate is out, and invite all her close
friends over to her room. When she comes home jump out and do the cheesy “SURPRISE”
scream. The room should be decorated and everyone should be dressed nicely. Also, there should
be a cocktail waiting for her.

2. Fake plan for something you know she’ll hate:
Act like you are taking the initiative on
planning something for your roomie’s birthday. Tell her that you are going to bring her somewhere
she will absolutely hate. If your roommate is polite, she probably won’t say anything and will
appreciate your effort. However, she will be pleasantly surprised when you bring her somewhere
awesome instead!

3. Do something routine, but still make her special:
Even if everyone decides to do something
ordinary for your roommate’s birthday, you can still make it special. If you are bringing her to a
restaurant, then make her wear a tiara, split the cost of her meal amongst the rest of your friends,
and call ahead to make sure her favorite dessert is ready with candles. If you are going to a club,
pay for her admission, buy her a drink, and have the DJ make a shout out to the birthday girl and
play her favorite song. It’s the little things that create great birthday memories.

4. Buy/make her the perfect gift:
If your roommate has been hinting about wanting something
for a while, surprise her and get it for her birthday. If it is something expensive, then split it with
your other mutual friends. If you’re really poor (which most college students are) make her
something that will make her laugh. A good go-to gift is a collage of pictures that highlight your
memories together. My friend once received a collage that was only pictures of her when she was
“slightly intoxicated.” Let’s just say she wasn’t very photogenic when her eyes were glazed over
and she was standing on a table. Any arts and crafts project that will make your roommate laugh or
reminisce on the good times is always a great present.

These are only a few ideas you can use to make your roommate’s birthday memorable and
special. Overall, it is important to remember your roommates birthday, and make a big deal out of it
for her. Even though we are all college students, and we are all super busy, we have to remember
to pay attention to things like this. How would you feel if your roommate didn’t celebrate your
birthday? …Exactly.
