This weekend, I decided to turn the group chat of friends into a platform for a mock interview. I posed a few questions to my friend-group that tested the level of their “woke.” I think it’s very vital to be consciously aware of the “real world” and the threats that coincide. So I thought it would be necessary to question the woke ability of the people I surround myself with (all jokes of course). This was conducted in a light-hearted and safe space environment and is not meant to provide insight or pose any kind of controversy. However, I do think everyone should keep up with current events, and upkeep with the knowledge of our surroundings- to allow for growth, development, insight as well as an educated sense of self. Alas, after my ramble I shall provide with the results of the interview- I will omit names for safe-space confidentiality purposes.

What do you think being woke means?

Someone who doesn’t follow society like a sheep- to question and analyze the world around you in an open-minded way.

How offended are you by white people wearing cornrows?

To each their own, but it is a controversy and could be seen as cultural appropriation if not treated respectfully.

How do you feel about manspreading?

It’s not polite I agree, but it needs to be done sometimes you know?

Do you think statues of historical American figures that were slave owners should be removed?

In my opinion, yes – we shouldn’t honour terrible people.

Is it wrong to assume gender?

Yes because everyone can be who they want to be. Just be neutral you know?

Do you believe white privilege is problematic and prevalent?

Of course, it is! White people don’t have to worry about the problems that accompany coloured skin- like violent racism- and that is a privilege!

How do you feel about Halloween costumes that stereotype cultures?

It seems like appropriation – Halloween is a holiday where costumes reflect the “scary” and “abnormal” so why would it be okay to mix in culture and race?
