Running Your Way Into Spring

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Purdue chapter.

As we make our way into spring and the temperature starts to creep up into the 50’s and 60’s, I can’t help but think of getting back into the spirit of running. If you are a runner like me, nothing is more joyful than watching the snow disappear and dismissing the thought of ever running on a treadmill again (at least until next winter). Spring is the perfect time for running your way back into shape, even if you are a beginner and trying it for fun. Here are a few ways to get motivated, and some tips for keeping your workout fresh and exciting!

1.) Fill your iPod with new music!
Nothing gets me more motivated to run than finding music that pumps me up and gets me excited to be active. Expand your normal taste! I love Lady Gaga, but sometimes you need a different boost of energy. Check out new remixes to songs or even get into some Techno artists, like Kaskade and Morgan Page. These beats will keep your legs moving and inspire you to go that extra mile!

2.) Buy new workout gear!
When you look good, you feel good! I personally love any running gear from Nike or Under Armour. The material they use to lock in sweat while keeping you cool or warm, depending on the weather, is essential! Also, a good rule of thumb when deciding what to wear for your run is to dress 20 degrees warmer than it actually is. You’ll still stay warm without having too many layers.

3.) Start slow and build!
Whether you are a long-distance runner, a sprinter, or just running for fun, it’s important to ease your way into running. Start with a pace you are comfortable with. You should feel tired, but also like you can continue for a while. Once you have become comfortable with your run, it’s time to mix it up! Always dread that huge hill you have to walk up to reach your residence? Use it as a sprint zone! After running at a decent pace for 20 minutes, do 6-8 sets of sprints up a hill. This will work your gluts and trigger your fast-track muscles, which are great for sprinting. Confusing your muscles is an important aspect with any form of exercise, and running is no exception!

Running, no matter what the pace, is a great way to get your endorphins going. Stress from school wears at your mind and body, so try to use running as an escape from everything. Whether you decide to run alone or with friends, get moving chica!
