Halloween Classics

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Purdue chapter.

The weekend we’ve been waiting for all semester long is finally upon us: Halloweekend! I know many of you are ready to hit the town and rage in your costume of choice—the giant loofah will always be my favorite—but Halloween is also a time to reflect on yesteryear. Back to the days when you would dress up like Pocahontas (3 years in a row isn’t overkill, right?), roam the neighborhood collecting your fair share of sugar, and cap off the night indulging in your loot with your best friends while Hocus Pocus captured your attention on the TV. Believe it or not, these days weren’t that long ago. So what better way to get into the real spirit of Halloween than by curling up on the couch with your friends and watching a few spooky classics? Here are some choices that will get your weekend started on the right note.

1. Hocus Pocus
For many of you, there is no surprise that this choice ranks at the top of the list. I don’t think a Halloween went by during my childhood (or adulthood if we’re being honest) where I didn’t watch the Sanderson sisters roam about Salem. This film is definitely a Halloween classic, and if you’ve never had the chance to see it, there’s no better time than the present!

2. Halloweentown
I’ll be completely honest and say I loved Halloweentown when I was little. This is the story of a young witch, Marnie, whose grandmother, a resident of Halloweentown, wants her to receive her witch’s training before she turns 13 and loses her powers forever. But that’s not all—something bad is brewing in Halloweentown, and its residents need all the help they can get. Join Marnie and her family as they fight to save Halloweentown and see how it all turns out!

3. The Nightmare Before Christmas
Another Halloween classic. When Jack Skellington, the Pumpkin King of Halloween Town stumbles across Christmas Town everything he once knew is turned on its ear. The clay-mation used in this film also gives it an eerie air that goes perfectly with the holiday’s theme.
