The idea that looks do matter probably goes against every single moral ingrained in you for the span of your entire life. However, sometimes they do during rush. I tried to stick to my own morals and look past the blonde hair, tan skin, and model-like bodies to really see what the girls were about, but sometimes you shouldn’t.

Take me as an example. I am about 5’4. I have short dark brown hair. I definitely was not born with a model figure and college hasn’t helped me get it in the slightest. I am very happy with the way I look. Of course, I’d love to be a few pounds skinnier and maybe a couple inches taller, but I’m still very satisfied with the way that I look. I felt even better about the way that I looked going in to rush events. My hair and makeup looked amazing. I wore outfits that I was super comfortable in. And of course, wearing a nice pair of heels makes anyone feel a lot better. So, by no means did I feel bad about myself during rush.

However, going in to a few sororities I felt a little off. As weird as it may sound, I was intimidated by the lack of brunettes in some rooms. I was intimidated by the tall, blonde, tan girls that just had to be models for something beyond their own Instagram accounts.

Just because these girls were drop dead gorgeous does not mean there is anything wrong with them. Some of the nicest sisters I talked to were in these sororities with a certain look. These girls were so warm and welcoming. I had amazing conversations with them. They really did make me feel like I could potentially be a part of their sorority.

The point I am trying to get at is this; when rushing, ask yourself if you can see yourself comfortable in that sorority in a week, month, or year. Could you see yourself lounging around in sweatpants and no makeup while still feeling confident?

Yes, for the time being it may be nice to be a part of a sorority with the most attractive girls on campus. However, you need to remember that you want to be in a place where you don’t feel the need to change your look.

If you even question whether you have the look that the particular sorority has then maybe the place isn’t for you. There are several different sororities at different schools. There is bound to be one just for you. I know I definitely found my place in Greek life.

So, in conclusion, by no means am I saying that any sorority is too gorgeous for anyone. However, I am saying that you need to feel like you are in a place where you can be the best version of you.
