Life can be really tough. I’m a firm believer that everyone should attempt to go to therapy at some point, because talking out your problems is extremely beneficial. Just having someone to listen and advise you of healthy coping mechanisms is a helpful process. I’m also aware that attending therapy isn’t completely realistic for every person and that opening up to someone is hard. When I was in between therapists and didn’t have anyone to turn to, I began writing in a journal.

When I began writing, I felt skeptical. My entries were very flat and filled with details of my day that didn’t really matter. I was half worried someone would find it and read all my secrets and half worried they would think that I was a stereotypical teenage girl writing in her diary. Since then, I’ve really learned not to care what people think of me. By writing out my feelings, I’m able to reflect on my emotions in a healthy manner. I’m able to take that extra second to think through how I’m actually feeling. I’m able to ask myself, “Am I angry? Or just frustrated at the situation and sad that it isn’t going the way I hoped it would?”

Journaling has also allowed me to reflect on my past and see how I’ve grown and changed as a person. I have journals that are filled with memories, love, and hopes for the future. I’ve written down lists and goals that have come to fruition and it is so fulfilling to see.

I keep a journal as a healthy outlet for emotions. I keep a journal so I can find ways to connect my past and present. I keep a journal to see how I’ve manifested my dreams and to see how hard I’ve worked to make them happen. I keep a journal for me.
