Why Everyone Should Watch Shameless

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PSU chapter.

If there were a show where you could earn a dollar every time a character took the “L,” it would probably be Shameless. If you’re anything like me, or the regular American teenager from a boring, suburban town, you are or will become hooked on Shameless.

With the show becoming available on Netflix recently, everyone from my friends, to Pam, the adorable cashier that works at Good 2 Go is hooked. It took me until the last week of winter break and many pictures of Carl and Lip Gallagher on my Twitter timeline for me to give into the craze, but let me tell you I don’t a regret a minute of it.

Besides the good looking men smoking cigarettes, the copious amounts of nudity and the general thoughts of “I didn’t think their lives could get any worse,” –  it never fails to shock you.

The show takes place on the south side of Chicago where there is danger lurking on every corner. Because both of my parents were raised in Chicago and most of my family still lives there, I’ve been there multiple times. However, I’ve only seen the “nice” part of the Chicago suburbs. I didn’t realize until I watched Shameless that there are not so nice parts of the city too. Luckily, we have the Gallagher family to bring humor, beer and cigarettes to make the reality a little less scary.

I guess my point is that, while it’s all well and good to drool over Lip Gallagher’s butt, it’s also important to recognize that there are people who actually live through these types of problems every day and unfortunately there isn’t a screenwriter there to save them. Think about that while you have a drink at The Alibi Room.
