What I’d Buy on a YSL No-Budget Shopping Spree

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PSU chapter.

I love the idea of luxury brands like the next person, but as a college student, there is no budget to spend on anything other than essentials. However, nothing will stop me from browsing online to see if any high-end items strike my fancy.

Most of the time, they do. I sit there with my eyes glued to the screen, wondering if this is something I really need. The answer is always no, but I can pretend, right?

Yves Saint Laurent (YSL) is a high-fashion designer with an authentic and seductive style. Some fashion lovers consider him the most influential European fashion designer of the modern era!

His brand was founded in Paris, France, in 1961. Some of his signature styles are the smoking (tuxedo) jacket and the Mondrian-inspired dresses.

So, I will dabble in the YSL website and see where my shopping fingers take me.

OPYUM CHARM BRACELET IN METAL AND RHINESTONE – $395

Something about the chainlink material with the tilted pear-shaped rhinestone is doing it for me. I am not big on logos for high-end brands, so this simplicity is lovely. I am also a silver bracelet girl, which would complement the other one I always have on my wrist. This bracelet would be easy to dress up or wear every day!

SOLFERINO SMALL SATCHEL IN QUILTED SUEDE – $3,100

I don’t own many handbags, but the ones I do are dark in color. I was so close to picking out another black one just because they go with everything. Nevertheless, I switched gears and hunted for a dreamy summer bag. Growing up, my mom engrained in my head that summer bags can’t be black — I don’t know if that’s just my thing, but here we are.

Anyways, the one I chose makes me want to go abroad to Italy, but that’s probably because Solferino is a small town there. Regardless, I need it. The tan quilted suede is scratching an itch in my brain I didn’t even know existed. I want this baby to rest on my shoulder as I get blinded by some European sun.

RUFFLED LONG SKIRT IN SILK – $10,500

I have never owned anything as eccentric and editorial as this. I want to put it on my body immediately and frolic around in it. I’m obsessed with the asymmetric hem and the transparent silk middle section.

This is not something I would ever pick out, but since I am playing pretend, it will be mine. You know what? I actually decided that I do not deserve to own it because my styling would do it zero justice. But it will still be mine.

AVIATOR JACKET IN VINTAGE VEGETABLE-TANNED LEATHER – $6,890

The pockets, the collar, the belt detail and the overall length are all perfect. I’m obsessed with this wash and the way it’s not a jet-black color — it makes it look worn and vintage-like. If I had this in my standard wardrobe, I would pair it with my favorite jeans, a cropped shirt, fun shoes and a cute bag. It would never reach its true luxurious potential.

In my imaginary closet, I want to wear it with the ruffled long silk skirt above. I would feel unstoppable with those two together! Okay, now it looks like I am making an outfit — let’s keep going!

OPYUM PUMPS IN PATENT LEATHER – $1,390

The only appropriate thing to wear with the preceding pieces is a pair of obnoxious, hot pumps. I do not make the rules. As I said earlier, I have never been a girl that loves the look of designer logos on items, but these shoes have left me no other choice.

I want to purchase these bad boys because I want to know what it’s like to have the YSL logo as heel support. I wonder if they would feel just as secure as other heels — not that other heels are comfortable. But these are iconic statement heels. Just let me do a lap around the block.

SL 570 – $520

To top off this sultry, dark, fashionable fit, I need to include a pair of sunglasses. The selection on the website was beyond impressive — I would have been happy with any pair. However, the SL 570 style is the best bet to complement my ovular face shape.

The squared-cat eye lens and metal framed rim would add another powerful edge to the look I am going for. They scream, “I know what I am doing,” and that’s what I want people to believe.

These few items cost a huge total of about $22,800. While that is less than an entire semester of tuition, it would still put me out of business.

I encourage you to get lost scrolling through luxury websites and pretend that the items in your cart will become something more than pixels on your screen. Happy shopping!
