‘Tis the Season to be Trendy

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PSU chapter.

There is something to be said about traditions, those long standing rituals that have been passed down from generation to generation. And with the leaves falling from the trees and the snow descending from the sky, it is no doubt everyone has their mind set on their favorite traditions of all: Those of the the holiday season.

But when it comes to fashion, how do we feel about traditions? Fashion should be fresh – constantly changing – and this holiday season is the perfect oppourtinity to show all your family members and friends that your wardrobe has freed itself from the ghost of holiday’s past.

The rule of thumb here is to avoid being predictable. Whether its being kissed under the mistletoe or kissed come midnight as the ball drops, everyone loves a little holiday surprise. Mix a whole lot of trendy with a splash of tradition (let’s not forget the killer accessories), and surprise is exactly what you’ll get.

What’s Christmas without a festive oversized sweater? With tons of different styles ranging in price and color, the holiday sweater is an essential piece to any fashionista’s wardrobe. Something plain and traditional, such as this white knit sweater from Forever 21, will certainly do the trick! However, the key to pulling off the look is pairing the top with a funky maxi skirt, like this option from Brandy Melville, and a chunky necklace. Mastering this stylish look will guarantee the presents will not be the only thing grabbing the attention of your family members that night.

Excited to see your girl friends after the long separation? The long anticipated gossip sesh is the perfect place to show your girls that you still have all the right moves when it comes to style. You can never go wrong with the go-to statement shirt and Military Bootie, but don’t forget to show off your uniqueness with some printed leggings from Tobi. Although your friends will be excited to hear what you have to say about your fabulous life at school, once you enter your room in your awesome outfit, they may forget what they wanted to talk about in the first place.

The cold weather is all the more reason to turn up the heat – especially when it involves the high school crush that got away. There is no hotter color than Red (as Taylor Swift has informed us), and nothing trendier at the moment than some black Knee Socks, to show your man that you are sexy, yet sophisticated. Debut this sure fire look at your friend’s holiday party and you will have all the guys drooling over you in no time.

And of course, no matter how many years pass, the age-old question remains: what do I wear on New Years Eve? Any fashion forward chick knows the promise in a sparkly dress or top, but have you ever thought about how to “jazz” up this traditional look? Rather than go with the sweet dress, show you edgy side by opting for a sparkly blazer paired with black dress pants and suede booties to match. While the ball drops, you’ll feel confident as you bring in the new year with the ones you love in a look you love just as much.

There is no doubt this holiday season will be filled with joy, love, and magic, but it should also be comprised of funky fashions and trendy must-haves. As the temperature drops your style should rise, making you the center of attention in all that you do.

Just as your favorite snickerdoodle cookies and hot chocolate, the element of surprise never gets old. Some things about this holiday should be traditional, while some aspects need a little sparkle to shake things up. Keep your fashion fans wanting more; by the end of your break, you’ll wish you had more time to wow them with your outfits. Keep it fun, keep it trendy, but don’t forget to keep some of your pieces timeless – after all, there is something to be said about traditions.
