Five Reasons Why Joining A Sorority Is Worth It

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PSU chapter.

The thought of beginning and going through formal recruitment can be scary. When I began to consider joining a sorority at Penn State, I was extremely apprehensive for a few reasons. Firstly, Greek life at Penn State is extremely relevant on campus, and I was honestly scared of what that meant. Would I be left out if I wasn’t in a sorority? Next, I just thought that being in a sorority wasn’t for me. However, after going through with formal recruitment, I can confirm that it is absolutely worth it. Here are five valuable reasons to go Greek.

Leadership

During my time in a sorority, I have always sought out and held leadership positions. Not only do these opportunities bulk up my resume, but they also have helped me meet new people within my pledge class. With each new role, you work with new sisters that you may not normally socialize with. Being a leader in my sorority ultimately improved my leadership skills because it made me more comfortable with public speaking, communication, and teamwork.

Networking

Being in a sorority has seriously developed my personal and professional network. Honestly, 95% of my LinkedIn connections are the results of networking with my sorority sisters. With this, I feel like I have met so many like-minded people who can help my future career. Additionally, I met fellow members who are in my major, so I always have a friend in my classes.

Time Management

Involvement in my sorority has seriously improved my time management skills. Before I joined a sorority, I was not in any clubs, so I felt extremely bored when I was not in my classes. Being in sorority gave me activities to do during the week, like sisterhood events and study hours. Having these tasks to do helped my time management skills because I had more things to do, so I had to get my work done in a more timely manner.

Involvement

One of the most valuable things I have gotten out of my sorority was being involved with THON at Penn State. My sorority has multiple THON families we help support, which has been extremely moving. It is so enlightening to think that Greek life can make such an important difference towards finding a cure for pediatric cancer. However, it is important to notice some of the other events at Penn State that those in Greek life participates in. Examples of these philanthropies include participating in Greek Week, Greek Sings, and Homecoming. Additionally, my sororities philanthropy is Ronald McDonald House Charities, so we do a lot of fundraisers to help raise donations for those who need assistance.

Finding Your People

I honestly have met all my best friends at Penn State through my sorority. I live with people I met through my sorority and all my other friends have stemmed from Greek life as well. I can consistently rely on these girls to improve my days and create the best college experience with me. We truly do live for each other. It is also important to recognize that each sorority has its own vibe, so you can find your people no matter what chapter you go to. Make the decision that is best for you and you will find your sisters regardless.

I hope these reasons help relieve stress going into recruitment season. Being in a sorority is not for everyone, but it is certainly worth considering. Just trust the process.
