American Horror Story: The Haunting is Back!

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PSU chapter.

*Spoiler Alert*

HOLY SCARINESS! American Horror Story: Coven starts of like WOAH! In your face. Although this season is not the usual ghosts/typical Halloween scary stuff, this season targets a major haunting for the United States: slavery. In the beginning we meet the character Madame LaLaurie who has slaves in her basement and tortures them. Being so creepy that AHS is, they of course show us the distorted faces of these slaves. Also, one of the most haunting scenes in this episode is when madame LaLaurie uses fresh blood and dabs it on her face, in use as blush.

The episode then quickly flashes to present life, where the actress Taissa Farmiga, who was in the original cast of American Horror Story, realizes she is a witch and is sent of to “witch school”. At this school we meet famous actresses Emma Roberts and Gabourey Sidible (lead actress in Precious) and Jaime Brewer who was also in the original cast.

Not only did the first episode address the issue of slavery, but it also addressed the issue of rape in the nightlife, party environment. In this scene, Emma Watson and Taissa Farmiga attend a party where Taissa meets original cast member Evan Peters, who then quickly fall for each other, echoing their love interest in the original American Horror Story. After Emma Robert’s character gets gang raped at the party, she teaches the boys who raped her a lesson.

Towards the end of the episode we meet the actress Jessica Lange, who is probably one of the most famous faces of the American Horror Story series. She plays “Supreme Witch” and we can already tell that she is planning many mischievous things. The last event that keep the viewers on their toes, is the finding and resurrection of Madame LaLaurie.

There is so much to look forward to. Although, this first episode did not make me sleep with the lights turned on, I know the next episodes will enroll into something beyond scary. American Horror Story:Coven has incredible drama and a great story line. So turn off your lights, grab a blanket, and watch American Horror Story:Coven every Wednesday at 10pm on FOX.
