5 Movies that Will Scare Every Horror Movie Junkie

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PSU chapter.

With Halloween approaching, I feel like it’s only fitting to binge watch the scariest movies I can possibly find. If you’re one of the few people who not only enjoys horror movies, but also has difficulty discovering a movie that can truly terrify you to your core, this is the place for you!

I’ve compiled a list of 5 movies, in no particular order, that will scare even the bravest souls. I’ve also included my own professional rating, as a crazy horror movie enthusiast, of course.

So buckle up, grab some popcorn (or a security blanket) and get ready to be scared sh!tless!

1) The Nun

Starting off strong, we have the terrifying prequel to “The Conjuring” series. When a nun commits suicide in a Romanian convent, Father Burke and Sister Irene discover a dark force inhabiting the area. Without much help, the two must drive this evil presence out of the convent, discovering the unholy secret that haunts it.

If haunted churches and demons from Hell scare you, you might want to sleep with the lights on after this one!

Scare scale: 9/10

Overall rating: 8/10

2) Us

In Jordan Peele’s scariest movie yet, we follow Adalaide Wilson and her family on vacation in her hometown. After having flashbacks from a traumatic event in her childhood, Adalaide can’t help feeling that something bad is going to happen; not surprisingly, she’s right.

When a family physically identical to the Wilson’s shows up to the house, we fall down a rabbit whole of psychological confusion and absolute chaos. This terrifying, alternate dimensional story will not only have you hanging on the edge of your seat with one eye open, but also leave you just a little (or a lot) confused.

It may take a few Google searches to unscramble the symbolism and surprise ending, but maybe if you’re clever enough you can figure out this puzzle on your own!

Scare Scale: 8/10

Overall rating: 9/10

3) Hereditary

Ellen Leigh was known for living an extremely secretive life. When she passes away, her daughter and grandchildren begin uncovering the bone-chilling truth about her past. They must fight to expunge these secrets when they realize that her fate will soon become theirs as well.

The plot is heavily centered around the powerful world of the occult, which may just mess with your psyche in the most terrifying way. In this mystery/horror/thriller rolled up into one, you’ll need to pay close attention to unravel the ending!

Scare Scale: 9/10

Overall rating: 9/10

4) Oculus

In an attempt to avenge their parent’s deaths, Kaylie and Tim delve into the legend behind a haunted mirror. The mirror, known as the “Lasser Glass,” may hold the answers behind the events that destroyed their family.

The Lasser Glass has the ability to distort reality, causing those in its vicinity to become increasingly distanced from the world around them. In order to find the truth, the two must walk the fine line between cracking its code, and not allowing themselves to fall under its spell.

Scare Scale: 8/10

Overall rating: 7/10

5) Gerald’s Game

When Gerald and his wife Jessie go on a secluded getaway, they decide to play a kinky game in which Jessie is handcuffed to the bed. This sex game goes horribly wrong, and Gerald dies of a heart attack, leaving Jessie still in handcuffs, and completely alone.

At a lake house in the middle of nowhere, Jessie soon realizes she is completely alone with her thoughts, and the body of her dead husband. This terrifyingly disturbing film will mess with your mind in such a chilling manor, you may just need to take a break in the middle!

Scare Scale: 8/10

Overall rating: 7/10

Final Thoughts:

After watching more horror movies in one sitting than most people do in a lifetime, I can honestly say that these five scared me to my very core. I’ve loved scary movies for as long as I can remember, which means I’m pretty desensitized to all things horror. With that being said, I feel very confident that you will be absolutely terrified by any of these movies, even if you don’t scare too easily!
