4 Inventions We Wish Were Real

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at PS Berks chapter.

1. Mattel Hoverboard

If you are as in love with “Back to The Future” as I am, you will know about the floating neon pink board that is the Mattel Hoverboard. We first saw the appearance of this fake invention in the second installment of the Back to The Future trilogy, which resembles that of a floating skateboard that Marty McFly uses when he and Emmet Brown travel to 2015. While still not a possibility right now, we may have the technology soon and could get our own hoverboards. Recently a California architect, Greg Henderson, has created a hoverboard using maglev technology as a step in creating earthquake safe buildings. While protecting buildings from earthquakes is important, I’d like to see Mattel give Henderson all the money in the world so I can get my hands on the toy we were promised in the 80’s.

2. Men In Black Neurolizer

Another movie invention that we need in our lives is the Neurolizer from the “Men In Black” movies and comic books. This invention is one that we need because it erases memories. It also lets the user manipulate the victims mind while they are in a hypnotic-like state. Just put on your glasses, a little flash, and boom, your crush will never know about the broccoli that food stuck in your teeth, and let’s just add the fact that they think your shirt is nice too. Let them give you a little pick me up.

3. Mr. Beard® Beard Machine

For some people, growing facial hair is easy as pie, but for some of us, we will forever be beardless. This, my friends, is a crime. So what is a beardless person to do? Head over to thinkgeek.com and pick up the Mr. Beard® Beard Machine! According to the website, you can “pick your B-Cup, stick your face in the Mr. Beard® Beard Machine, and in mere moments you’ll have the facial hair of your dreams.” It “Uses real human hair particles for a salon-quality look and feel.” And it’s “Patent-pending process permanently bonds hair to your face until you decide to shave it off and try another style!” This Keurig -like machine is a sad April-fool’s joke though. So as much as we could wish for this to be real, it is simply not so.

4. Invisibility Cloak

My inner Potter head might be showing as I write about this invention that isn’t a reality. Who wouldn’t want an invisibility cloak? Brought to us by the mind of J.K. Rowling through the Harry Potter series, it’s been invention we’ve loved since the primary book’s first release in 1997. So much mischief and mayhem could be done with an invisibility cloak. THINK OF ALL THE PRANKS THAT COULD BE ACCOMPLISHED. Even cooler is the fact that scientists at the University of Rochester in New York have come closer to creating a cloak by creating a lens much like optometrists may use that can hide large objects like people. Baby steps.
