Being A Business Major

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Providence chapter.

The other day I heard a perspective student ask one of the students “Why become a business major?”. Although the answer is different for each student, I thought I would give some insight. The best way to illustrate this is to list the pros and cons of my time here as a business major. That way, you can decide if you like it. :)

Pros:

It’s a versatile major. EVERYTHING is run by businesses nowadays.

It prepares you for life. The things you learn (such as budgets and organization) help you function with day to day activities as well. Not just businesses.

Professionalism. You gain a certain professionalism when you major in business. You give presentations in suits and ties, you present your project with great presentation skills, etc. These skills you’ll use in your future career paths, and they will get you ahead of the game.

Networking. PC is great for networking. The Office of Career Services offers so many ways for PC students to connect with other business professionals.

You’re busy. Depending on the person, I suppose this could be considered a con. But, if you’re like me, and you love running around, planning things, and getting things together – business is your major.

Experience is crucial. Unlike some other career paths, experience is central to your success. Rather than learning and walking blindly into your career, it is CRUCIAL to get experience before you enter the work world.

-It’s fun. To me, nothing is better than seeing an event, an organization, a project, etc being successful and to know you’ve done your part.

Cons:

It’s preferable to live by a city. This is one of the main reasons why I chose PC. The city of Providence is within minutes of the campus, that way I can get experience in a great location. However, depending on where you live at home, this could affect you. But, most states have their own cities (even if it isn’t New York) that will have big businesses as well.

You have to love it. Like most majors, if you don’t love your job, it can be a bore. But business is so versatile that I’m sure that any career path you choose to pursue, business will work for you.

Now you see why I love business? :)

Have a great weekend everyone!
