Tips For Staying Organized at the Start of The Semester

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Point Park chapter.

The start of the new semester is a hectic time. New classes, new routines, maybe even new jobs! Keeping organization in mind when acclimating to your new schedule will help you maintain your sanity and a decent GPA (Maybe even a social life too, but no promises).

  1. A folder for each class – Cramming all your papers into one folder means trouble! Folders are super cheap: often less than .50 per folder at most school supply stores. This allows you to keep all your class papers in a separate place. It’ll comes in handy when you’re searching for that miscellaneous worksheet with all the instructions you need for an assignment.
  2. A five subject notebook – Condense your notes! Single notebooks can make for crowded book bags and workspaces in your apartment or dorm. Keeping all your notes in one book is a simple solution.
  3. A daily/weekly planner – for some people this is the best way to keep track of upcoming events/ assignments due. If you have the time to fill out the planner, it is a great tool to use. For those of you looking for a more digital solution, the iPhone calendar is helpful for a lot of people (myself included). It is the best way to save important dates. The notifications on my phone keep me constantly updated. There’s no need to worry about checking my planner when my phone is doing the work for me. Why not make the most of the phone you constantly carry around?
  4. Consistent alarms – sleeping and waking at relatively consistent times each day can keep you sleep schedule on track and help you get into a better work rhythm. Plus, if you wake up at the same time you do for classes on the weekend, you’ll get more work out of your weekends!
  5. Scheduling your time to yourself – We all know how hard it can be to snag some alone time during the busiest parts of the semester! Do yourself a favor and schedule blocks of time to be alone. Whether you set aside that time to do homework, study for a test or simply relax, you’ll thank yourself for the peace and quiet!

There you have it! Use these tips to start the semester off right; you’ll thank yourself later.
