The Next Big Thing: Alessia Cara vs. Kevin Garrett

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Point Park chapter.

Reading this title, you were probably thinking ‘who are these people?,’ and at one point I was asking the same question. Well, let me introduce these young talents to you:

Alessia Cara

Alessia, hailing from Canada, is definitely one of the coolest female musicians in the game right now. Between Drake and Justin Bieber originating from Canada too, there has to be something in the water  up North! She recently signed to Def Jam records just this year at the age of 18. She released her first single, “Here,” this past April, Claiming over 30 million listens on Spotify alone.

She has this perfect cross between Lorde and Amy Winehouse. Though she is definitely more pop than any other genre, she does it in the best way possible. Alessia’s EP is out currently, called Four Pink Walls. There are five songs on it and all there is to do after listening is to hit replay. I wouldn’t be surprised if we are all singing the words to her next single by summer.

Kevin Garrett

This beautiful man is only 23 and already one of the top rising stars. He is originally from Pittsburgh (Woo!), but he is now based out of Brooklyn, New York. He’s gaining recognition quick and from important people, like Katy Perry!

His sounds are similar to SZA and Alina Baraz, however, he totally has his own sound. It’s much more mellow and vibey than anything else. He has the voice of an angel and produces like a genius.

Kevin is signed to Jay-Z’s label, Roc Nation, and has an EP out called Mellow Drama. There’s five songs, and just like Alessia Cara, you will want to hit replay. I don’t really see his music being on the radio, however, I surely see him getting a huge following from the internet.

Overall, both of these singers are HOT. We will be seeing much more of them considering both of their EP’s were dropped just this year. Whether we are listening to the radio or scrolling through twitter we will totally be seeing these faces and hearing their voices plenty more!
