5 Mobile Apps Worth Checking Out

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Point Park chapter.

We spend a lot of time on our phones and tablets, probably more than we’re willing to admit. So if we’re going to spend all that time we might as well be doing something we enjoy! And maybe even something useful! Maybe… These are the top 5 coolest apps you need to try!

1. Yik Yak

Yik Yak is a social network app much like Twitter. Except for the fact that it’s entirely anonymous, what you see is based on where you are, and it’s meant for college students! You enter your location when you start the app, and your feed is all content from people who are posting “Yaks” around you. You post a Yak like you would post a tweet. You can also add a handle, so your level of anonymity is up to you! If you like a Yak, you upvote it. If you don’t like it, you downvote it. You can also reply to people’s Yaks, or as it’s called in the app, Yak back! Yik Yak is available for free on the App Store.

2. Sleep Cycle

This app is a must have! It monitors your sleep through motion and audio by resting face down next to your pillow through the night. After 5 nights of monitoring your sleep, it gives you daily diagnostics on how you slept, and even graphs to show when you were in deep sleep, and when you weren’t! The best part however, is the alarm clock. Rather than choosing a specific time to wake up, you choose a 30 minute interval and the app automatically wakes you up within those 30 minutes when you’re sleeping the lightest! This way, you don’t wake up groggy and tired! Sleep Cycle is available for 99 cents on the App Store.

3. BuyPartisan

If you’re interested in politics, this is an app that you need to check out! BuyPartisan works by scanning the barcodes on products. Once a barcode has been scanned, the app searches for what political parties (if any) that company donates too. It tells you the political affiliation of the CEO, Board of Directors and even the employees. It also has a list of popular companies so that you can compare the statistics on 2 or more at a time. BuyPartisan is available for free on the App Store.

4. Imoji

Imoji makes for a hilarious edition to your app collection. First, you take a pic (or upload one), then you trim the edges with an eraser and viola! You’ve got an “emoji” of your friend’s face! You can send them in messages, or post them to Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. It’s creative, it’s funny, and it’s free on the App Store.

5. Godus

Godus is a fun, creative game that lets its players create their own small world. You can modify the terrain, expand to new places, and even lead the people of the virtual world to worship you. If you’re looking for a new mobile game, this is the one! Godus is available for free on the App Store.
