3 Pop Stars Who Fearlessly Support Feminism

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Point Park chapter.

The official definition of feminism is “the advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of political, social, and economic equality to men.” These leading women in the public eye have proven that they not only support the equality of women, but they also encourage women to be independent without the needs of a man.

Demi Lovato

Since Demi Lovato broke onto the pop scene in 2008, she has always been a huge feminist. Her songs stand for being yourself and not needing approval from anyone else. Her latest smash hit, “Confident,” is all about being comfortable in your own skin. Lovato’s music empowers young women to confidently go after what they want, without depending on a man. The lyrics in “Confident” state:

It’s time for me to take it / I’m the boss right now / Not gonna fake it / Not when you go down / ‘Cause this is my game And you better come to play

I used to hold my freak back / Now I’m letting go / I make my own choice / B*tch, I run this show / So leave the lights on / No, you can’t make me behave / So you say I’m complicated / That I must be outta my mind / But you’ve had me underrated / Rated, rated, rated

What’s wrong with being, what’s wrong with being / What’s wrong with being confident?”

The latest Lovato song is all about men underrating females. She is saying that there is nothing wrong with being confident and comfortable in your own skin. The music video is also pretty badass. You go, Demi!

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift is the ultimate feminist because she does not take crap from any man. If a guy does her wrong, the whole entire world hears about it. Swift always stands up for what she believes in, and empowers young women to do the same. She is a huge advocate for feminism because she believes a relationship isn’t everything. Females can be powerful without depending on a man’s approval. Taylor taught us that if a man does you wrong, it is perfectly acceptable to write a song about it and drag him in the media.

Got a long list of ex-lovers / They’ll tell you I’m insane / But I’ve got a blank space, baby / And I’ll write your name.

Beyoncé

Who runs the world? Girls. Beyoncé taught us that we can do anything just by being fierce and rocking it. She is a perfect example of a female completing owning it. Beyoncé is literal goals. Her hit “If I Were A Boy” talks about the inequality of women. She is saying that if she put herself in a man’s shoes, she would treat women differently. The song depicts the double standards between men and women. Beyoncé straight up slays in everything she does.

It’s time to celebrate these amazing women making a step in the right direction towards equality. Put on some girl power pop anthems and dance the night away!
