The aggressive wind, sharp cold temperature, and invasive elements all work together to violate our sensitive skin during the winter months. For many college women, this results in dry and cracked skin, frequent breakouts, and discomfort throughout the day. Here are some tips that will rescue your skin during the winter and can be used during the summer months as well.
The number one tip is to find a natural, fragrance-free moisturizer. This goes for all of your sensitive skin, not just your beautiful face! Fragrance oils in moisturizers often leave your skin red and irritated, and even cause allergic reactions like hives for some users. Especially in the winter, when your skin is drier, you are more likely to have a reaction than in the summer when your skin is naturally hydrated. I always use Neutrogena fragrance-free, oil-free facial moisturizer! Another note is to moisturize BEFORE your skin is dry, so very regularly! You do not want to wait until your skin is dry and cracking to moisturize.
Secondly, many people assume that you only need sunscreen in the summertime when the sun is shining its harsh rays, but sunscreen is mandatory in the winter too, even if it’s not sunny. With no protection, the sun can dry out your skin even more, as well as cause a build-up of dead skin cells, which become visibly evident over time. This is because the sun depletes the rate of skin cell renewal. I recommend putting on a face sunscreen before your makeup, and to make sure to apply it to your neck as well as your face.
Another key tip is to exfoliate! Whether it’s a liquid exfoliant, sugar scrub, or another type of body wash, this will keep your dead skin cells from clogging up. Finding a gentle exfoliant for your face can definitely be tricky, so I recommend using a liquid exfoliant on a cotton round after washing your face. I am a consistent lover of Paula’s Choice three-step skincare routine, which consists of a face wash, liquid exfoliant, and cream. Not only is it all-natural and perfect for sensitive skin, but it keeps your routine manageable.
One final tip that is very specific to winter is to avoid long, steamy showers. I know; we all love to stand under the hot water to escape the freezing, winter air, but this actually severely dries out your skin. I try to keep my showers lukewarm and under fifteen minutes, even though it is very tempting to enjoy the comforting hot water.
Most of my tips are useful for year-round skincare, but can be especially important during the winter when our skin is the most fragile!
