How to Maintain Your Long-Distance Friendships

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

Long distance relationships take a lot of work. The friendships you have in your everyday life currently might seem very easy to maintain. If you’re like me, it’s as simple as walking out into the living room or sending a text message in a group chat and voilà, plans have been made. If you live in a different city from your friends, this method is definitely not going to work. This doesn’t mean that keeping up with your long-distance friends is impossible, though. Here are some ways to stay in touch with your besties from afar! It won’t be easy, but nothing that’s worth it ever is, right?

BeReal

If you haven’t already hopped on this trend, then what are you doing? BeReal is an app that sends everyone one notification per day at the same time. It gives you two minutes to take a photo that captures what you’re up to, with both your front and back camera. You can comment and react with photos to your friend’s posts. It’s a fun way to feel connected and see what they’re up to in that exact moment!

Cappuccino

This app basically lets you and your friends create a collaborative podcast. You get to choose a prompt for your group and everyone can record an audio message with their response. Then, the next day the podcast is released to you and your friends so you can listen to what everyone had to say the previous day!

Facetime chats

Sometimes, the only sufficient way to catch up with a friend is via FaceTime. If you got a job promotion, went on a date or need help choosing an outfit, it’s definitely time to make a FaceTime call. There’s nothing better than getting advice or hearing someone’s reaction to your news in real time!

powerpoint party

You know those friend groups that don’t stay in touch constantly, but update each other occasionally? This option is for those people. Once a month or maybe even once every other month, you can create a PowerPoint with all your life updates and then share them with one another on a Zoom call!

Bond over tv shows

If you and your friends watch the same TV shows, then use it as an opportunity to stay in touch! Text each other your live reactions to the episodes as you watch or schedule a FaceTime session for the next day to recap your thoughts on the previous night’s episode!

plan your next visit

Knowing when you are going to be able to see each other next always helps make long-distance relationships easier to handle! Sit down with your calendar and figure out when you can go visit your friends in the cities where they live! Creating a google doc and setting up an itinerary for your visits can be a fun activity for your friends to do as a group! Having friends that live in different places means free accommodations on your next trip and there’s nothing better than being with the people you love face-to-face so don’t forget to make an effort to see one another in person!
