How to Make Old Clothes Into Something New

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

Your clothes are just waiting for you to make new fashion statements out of them. Why throw something out that you can reuse? Make something worthwhile out of your old hand-me-downs & check out some of the ways you can get started recycling!

Skirt -> Scarf

Have a beautiful skirt thats too small/big or damaged? Cut off the waistband and voila! You have created a circle scarf. In the example above, I burnt the back of this beauty in a fireplace, now you cant even tell!

Earring -> Necklace

Losing an earring is so sad, but it doesnt have to be. Take the one you have left, put it on a chain, and you have a stylish new necklace!

T-Shirt -> Pillow Case

Band, Track, Choir, Basketball, what do all of these things have in common? T-shirts. No matter your extracurriculars, Im sure youve accumulated lots of t-shirts.  If your workout drawer is overflowing with them, turn it into a pillowcase using the first set of steps above. Or, if you cant sew, try using the “tie up the sides of a t-shirt” technique in the last picture above.

Dress Pants -> Cylindrical Pillow Case

If you have this shape pillow or a larger sized dress pant, you can very easily make a pillowcase. My mom took one leg of a stripped pair of slacks, put it on a pillow, and used the pants drawstrings as ties on the ends to secure it like a tootsie roll. She doesnt miss her old pants, but guests have commented on how nice the fabric of our little couch decoration!

There are many more common ways to change up your old clothes:

T-Shirt -> Cut Up Shirt

T-Shirt -> Headband

Jeans -> Capris

Baby Clothes -> Dog Clothes

No matter what kind of clothing youre trying to reuse, dont be afraid to experiment! Its all in good fun, and if you cant make it work, its no loss to you.
