How to Avoid the Typical Restaurant Date

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

Whenever you start dating someone your go to’s are eating and partying together. This can sometimes drag on and then you end up finding yourself in a rut. In Pittsburgh this shouldn’t be a problem because there are endless things from art galleries to sporting events for you and your “boo thang” to do together to keep the spark alive.

1. Free with Your Pitt ID

One thing I hate about going out to grab food for a date is paying. Even if he pays we are still both broke college kids that don’t need to be spending 20 dollars every time we go out. This being said there is no better time to use all the free perks of your Pitt ID.

If you are an artsy couple you can go to the Carnegie Complex and check out the natural History museum or the art galleries. If you want to get out of Oakland don’t forget about the Andy Warhol museum and the Mattress Factory downtown that are also free. With this cold weather surrounding us there is no better place to warm up with your S.O. (significant other) than in the museum.

For the nature going couples Schenley Park is right at your doorstep. I’ve always heard a couple that works out together stays together, so go for a run and activate your endorphins. If working out isn’t your first pick, hop into Phipps Conservatory and see why it really is the largest Victorian greenhouse in the world. Now that the holidays are here it will be decorated for winter so make sure to check out the beautiful light set up!

2. Downtown

There is no better way to find something new to do than getting out of Oakland and heading into “dawn-tawn”. Now that it is winter time Market Square is decorated for the season, and there is no better way to get in the spirit than checking out the window decorations, or the gingerbread display in in PPG building. My favorite thing to do down there around this time is ice-skating around the huge Christmas tree. Also there are always different events going on so check out Pitt Arts and grab some free or discounted tickets for the next event in town!

3. Sport Goers

There is no better way to break from the norm dating than cheering on your favorite teams. Living in Pittsburgh there are so many available sport games to go to, from Pitt Basketball to penguin’s hockey. Tickets for Pitt basketball are only five dollars, and what better way to bond with your S.O. than rooting for your school! Along with this if you look into student rush tickets you can get tickets to the penguin’s hockey games for only 25 dollars.

4. A New Twist on Food

So you may hate going out to eat, but who says your date still can’t have food involved in it? Any Saturday or Sunday the two of you can head over to the Strip District and check out the famers market together. Grab some fresh produce, maybe even some Pittsburgh sports gear to wear to your next sporting event. Once you’ve grabbed some fresh food, take it home and make lunch or dinner for the two of you. Cheaper and different so what could be better?

5. Study Buddies

Living in Hillman really deters from my abilities to go out on dates, so what better way to spend time with your S.O. than studying together. Your grades will stay up and you still get the chance to spend some quality time together, especially around exam time. I find that I actually get more work done because after we finish all our work we can reward ourselves by grabbing a movie and cuddling up on the couch.

Living in Pittsburgh there are endless ways to spice up your dating life. Whether you want to stay in Oakland or head out into the neighborhoods you can always find something new to do with your S.O. on date night!
