Whether you’re fresh on campus this semester or you’re a veteran to the college grind, you’ve most certainly heard a thing or two about Communications Majors. Some people see the comm major as a joke or as the easy major, while others are just straight up confused at the mention of the subject. With such a vast array of public opinion and knowledge of our (fabulous) choice of major, we tend to get a variety of responses when the obligatory “So what’s your major?” question comes up. HC Pitt came together to come up with the top 7 things that Comm Majors are SUPER DUPER SICK OF HEARING.
1. “You never get any homework!”
False. Our homework is simply different than the traditional assignment. It takes just as long (if not longer) to map the history of mass media ownership as it does to balance 15 chemistry equations.
2. “Isn’t it just talking?”
Nope. Communications is a major subject matter, spanning from verbal and non-verbal cues we use everyday, to the way that our society is affected by media we see wherever we go. Talking is certainly an aspect of communication, but it is only brushing the surface.
3. “But that’s not a real major…”
We take courses, study, intern, and work hard just like everyone else.
4. “That’s just a backup major for people who fail out of their first choice.”
This is just plain rude.
5. “So you just study movies and social media?”
Although movies and social media are an aspect of some areas of communications, they certainly aren’t the only part.
6. “I wish my classes were as easy as yours.”
Allow me to refer you back to comment #1.
7. “What jobs can you get with that?”
You can do anything and everything. Many people see Comm Majors as wannabe journalists or movie enthusiasts who want to fool around with social media and film without ever doing any real work. NOT TRUE. Without Comm people, the world as we know it simply wouldn’t exist. The internet, TV, movies, music, magazines, newspapers, books: literally every form of entertainment that we have integrated into our daily lives, things we take for granted, would not be possible without people who study communications. Think about that next time you feel like dissing us ;)
