10 Things to Do in Pittsburgh with Your S.O. Before It Gets Cold Outside

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pitt chapter.

So much is happening in our lives right now – juggling new classes, football games, and having to wear a sweater in the morning and a tank top by noon can be overwhelming. Summer is heading out the door for the year and now is the time to make the most of it! Here are 10 things you can do with your significant other before fall is officially here. *Disclaimer, these all absolutely work with your closest friends, too!

1. Take the Incline Up to Mount Washington

You can do this any time of the year, but it’s definitely worth it to make the trip during each season. Your view from Mount Washington is going to change when it’s snowing versus when it’s 80 degrees. Plus, you get to see one of the top-ranked views in the country. If you’re a Pitt student, you can ride the incline to the top for free with your ID.

2. Have a Picnic on Schenley Plaza or in Schenley Park

Eating food is one of the best ways to pass time, and getting to enjoy the sun while doing so is even better! Set up a blanket and some food on the grass, and you’re good to go! I did this last year with sandwiches from Primanti’s and bubble tea from Fuku Tea, and it was amazing. Picnics also works well as a quick date between classes.

3. The Annual Pittsburgh Pierogi Festival

On September 24, head over to Kennywood for the Pierogi Festival! The event will run from 1-6 p.m. Better yet, your ticket also gains you access to some sweet rides at the amusement park.

4. Rent Bikes

You may have seen bikes parked in metered stations around Pittsburgh. They’re by the brand “Healthy Ride” and are super convenient. You basically rent a bike at any kiosk and return it at the kiosk of your choosing. I recommend riding down by North Shore and the Point for some picture-worthy views.

5. Point State Park

If you don’t know what Point State Park is, you’d probably recognize it as the fountain down by the stadiums where the rivers meet. The Point is great for people-watching, since you have a pretty huge view. The Carnegie Science Museum is next to it as well, so you and your date can let out your inner child.

6. See a Pirates game

Whether or not you like the team (or baseball), you can’t beat the views at PNC Park. Be sure to catch a game before the season ends!

7. The Strip District

The Strip is excellent for a more spontaneous trip. They offer farmer’s markets, tons of Pittsburgh sports gear, and a variety of delicious restaurants. I personally love the chocolate shop, “Mon Aime Chocolat”. Go on a Saturday or Sunday!

8. Eat Dinner Outside

This one’s simple, but take advantage of the many Pittsburgh restaurants with outdoor or rooftop seating! Steel Cactus has an awesome rooftop and even better food. You can also take a bus downtown or to Squirrel Hill and pick a fun restaurant once you’re there.

9. Randyland

Randyland is one of the most unique places I’ve been to in Pittsburgh. Located on Arch Street in Northside, artist Randy Gilson transformed his backyard into an indescribable wonderland that will blow your mind. Bonus points if you visit while Randy is out greeting guests.

10. Go Kayaking

Head over to North Shore to go kayaking on one of the three rivers. You have the option of solo or tandem kayaks, and will get a unique view of the city.

Pittsburgh is an incredible place, and I’m always finding new and exciting places to visit. I hope I’ve helped you fill your schedule for the next month with adventures and date nights!
