Campus Celebrity: The ASHTONishing CANE

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pepperdine chapter.

Ashton M. Cane is originally from Silver Spring, MD (Greater Washington, D.C. Area). He is a senior at Pepperdine University, studying Integrated Marketing Communications. Ashton is involved with the Student Programming Board as the Special Events Chair. He works for the Office of Admissions as a Campus Tour Guide and is a mentor for BSA’s Harambee Program (Big-Little Program).  Ashton hopes to become a lawyer in Los Angeles as part of a member of the California Bar. He also hopes to start his own career as a talent manager. If you’re looking for a manager, Ashton would definitely be the person to contact. We can’t wait to see what Ashton has in store for us; he’ll make it BIG in California.

When you were a freshman, did you know that you wanted to be involved on campus?

“Yes, I make it a point to be involved any where I go. I always look for how I can make an impact”.

How has The Board changed you?

“Being on the Board for 3 years, I can definitely say I am not the same person I was as a freshman. My friends always say I am a lot more out going, open, and free. I would say that I am a lot more confident, optimistic, and caring. The Board puts you in a place where you have to care about campus life and campus growth. I want this campus to be lively, fun, and where individuals can make memories”.

During your four years at Pepperdine, what has been the event or memory that you are most proud of?

“Planning Blue and Orange Madness (BOM) for the last 2 years as been a mind blowing experience. I have had the time of my life working with such talented people. Especially, this year with the new 2015-2016 team. I had so much fun and made great memories all while working a 15-hour day with some of my newest friends. I am very proud to be one of the 2 students that plans BOM and have it be a success for the last 2 years.”

What advice would you give a student who is thinking about becoming involved on campus (The Board, SGA, etc.)?

“Volunteer – it’s that simple – volunteer with the board or come to our events. We want to see that students care and that you’re willing to put in handwork and long hours to be a Boarder. It’s not a special club, it’s just a group of determined and dedicated students wanting to create community and fun.”

You are a very busy person. How do you manage your time?

“SCHEDULE every last thing you can possibly schedule in your life. I am in bed by 10:30 every night (except for weekends) and I am up by 9 (unless I have class at 8). Everything finds its time slot in my life and I get it done, no questions asked. Be real with yourself and get it done. Have a schedule that you stick to and follow it strictly (with exceptions for surprises and fun).”

Who is the person that has inspired you the most?

“My parents. They are smart business people and seeing them succeed throughout my life has been inspiring and a great motivator to be more like them. In any situation, I ask myself, “What would Lonnie and Kathryn, do?” They are great people. I wouldn’t trade them or change them for the world.”

What are your plans five years from now?

“Five years from now, I will hopefully be a lawyer living in Los Angeles and a member of the California bar. I would hope to work for a big network (like Lionsgate) and more specifically, in managing and writing celebrity, actor, and musician contracts. Or starting my career as a celebrity manager or entertainment agent. (If, you need one, give me a call).”

What is your biggest fear about graduating?

“I have so many dreams and aspirations – my fear is that I won’t have time to do them all.”

What do you miss the most about your home?

“I miss the East Coast attitude and realness. I can be/seem “intense”, as some put it. I know what I want and I mean what I say. There are moments when people take me the wrong way, but they always know I mean business; I hope no one has any hard feelings. But, once you get to know me, I am genuine and real. Like most east coasters – I have a hard exterior but a soft interior – I only want the best for people and for the work I do.”

Hola, mi llamo Marissa Hernandez. Hey, I'm Marissa Hernandez, and I am a senior studying Psychology at Pepperdine University. I am involved and an active member of Alpha Kappa Psi, Business Fraternity and I am currently working on campus through the theater department. I am very passionate about art and working with children. I hope to one day open my own center that is primarily focused on children and teens, through the involvement of art, sports, cooking, and other fun activities. I personally believe that community and communication with their peers who have similar interest, is the most effective way of therapy. Besides my personal interest in the future, in my free time I love to socialize with my friends, paint, eat food, and cook. I have a habit of having dinner parties every weekend about 10-15 of our closest friends, in which I cook large feast of Mexican food or other types of foods. I have an addiction to Sawtelle, in which you might catch my in the wee hours of the night getting Tatsu or wintermelon boba. I am pretty easy to find on campus, since I never go a day without wearing a single flower or a lot of flowers in my hair.
