Study Ablog: How To Pack

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Pace chapter.

Recently, I went on holiday to Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia. Normally, I would label myself as an experienced packer, but then again, I usually have the week prior to fully plan out what I’m going to pack. Unfortunately, that was not the case this time around. With that being said, having to guess pack what I would need/want (within reason) for the next four to five months into three suitcases; I’ve learned some things that I thought may help my fellow wanderlust collegiates!

Plan your vacation beforehand

My friend and I planned this trip last minute. This “holiday” was always in the back of our minds, but we had no time to put planning into it. That’s why we ended up booking activities while we were there and packed double the amount we needed!

Look at the weather

Before coming to Australia, I was really stressed about the types of clothes to bring because the end of their winter is during our summer and vice versa. Also, the sun is A LOT stronger in Australia. If you’re having trouble on deciding on what to bring, bring clothes that you know you can easily change into. When I first came to Australia it was mid-July. It was the coldest of Aussie’s winters and I was freezing, but thankfully I had a sweater and a light jacket to keep me warm.

Revaluate your necessities and make sure you can carry it all

Now, I know I’m not the only one who packs way more than they need, “just in case.” Honestly, traveling to another country and hearing how other people live out of a backpack, really puts into perspective how much we truly need. I know what you’re thinking: “But I need this extra jacket? What if it’s cold? What if I don’t want to wear the other one?” You most likely, on many occasions, end up not even wearing the jacket throughout your travels. So, before you pack something for the reason of a possible occurrence, question the item first. Or, you can do what I did, and have someone to tell you, “No, you are not bringing this, you don’t need it.”

Roll your clothes and put liquids in baggies

I’ve learned, to create more space in your suitcase, rolling your clothes tightly helps a lot. It makes the clothes more compact. When it comes to liquids such as shampoo and conditioner, I suggest to first putting them into smaller containers and then putting those bottles into baggies. This will make sure nothing spills all over the rest of your belongings. Also, make sure you consider what liquids to bring. It needs to be; at the very least, enough to get you through the first day you get to your location and the next day or two after. Trust me, there are places to restock and you will also have extra room in your suitcase.

G’day mates!
