Astrology is known as movements and relative positions of celestial bodies interpreted as having an influence on human affairs and the natural world. Astrology refers to the belief that the universe had an impact on who you are and the energy you possess when you were born. While, like any other belief, you’re allowed to not agree, understanding how and what astrology is might lead you to gain a greater understanding of both yourself and the world around you.

The Beginning

Thousands of years ago, Astrologers began to realize people who were born at certain times of the year, when the Sun, Moon, and planets were in the same part of the sky, had a great deal in common with each other. Because of this, astrologers began to construct horoscope charts for individual people.

A horoscope is a picture of the universe at the date, time, and place where the person was born. If an individual was to lie on their back and look up at the sky at the moment they were born, they’d see all the planets in the same positions as they are in their natal chart.

Most people, even those not remotely interested in astrology, can tell you what their sun sign is. However, what most do not realize is there is a lot more to a person than just their sun sign. This is also why one may not believe they align with their zodiac or horoscopes. For an individual to get a full understanding of who they are, they must research and understand their full natal chart and then how that relates to them as an individual.

The Basics

These 12 signs are divided into four groups, of which each contain three of the signs. The 4 groups signs are divided into are believed to be the building blocks of the universe: fire, earth, air, and water.

Fire I Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius I : Fire is positive, assertive, energetic, enthusiastic, impulsive, inspirational, courageous, powerful, passionate, and initiating.

Earth I Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn I : Earth is cautious, responsible, reliable, ambitious, practical, focused, disciplined, dependable, solid, and persevering.

Air I Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius I : Air is lighthearted, joyful, curious, restless, independent, communicative, impractical, entertaining, intellectual, and trusting.

Water I Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces I:  Water is compassionate, forgiving, understanding, emotional, creative, intuitive and spiritual.

Your Sun Sign

In your horoscope, the Sun represents independence, willpower, strength, energy, leadership, motivation, creativity, and even your popularity. It indicates your individuality and what you are really like inside. This is why your Sun Sign is commonly the first sign learned and discussed when talking about astrology.

Aries – The Ram – + March 21–April 20 + Element: Fire Ruling + Planet: Mars

Taurus – The Bull + April 21–May 21 + Element: Earth + Ruling Planet: Venus

Gemini – The Twins + May 22–June 21 + Element: Air Ruling + Planet: Mercury

Cancer The Crab + June 22–July 22 + Element: Water + Ruling Planet: Moon

Leo – The Lion + July 23–August 22 + Element: Fire Ruling + Planet: Sun

Virgo – The Virgin + August 23–September 23 + Element: Earth Ruling + Planet: Mercury

Libra – The Scales + September 24–October 22 + Element: Air Ruling + Planet: Venus

Capricorn – The Goat + December 23–January 20 + Element: Earth Ruling + Planet: Saturn

Aquarius – The Water Carrier + January 21–February 19 + Element: Air + Ruling Planet: Uranus

Pisces – The Fish + February 20–March 20 + Element: Water + Ruling Planet: Neptune

Your Rising or Ascendant Sign

Because of the Earth’s rotation on its axis, one of the twelve signs was on the eastern horizon at the time you were born. Your ascendant or rising sign reveals your personality. It can also have an effect on your physical appearance and how you present your individuality in everyday life.

If your ascendant is a fire sign (Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius), you might appear enthusiastic, optimistic, and full of energy.

If your ascendant is an earth sign (Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn), you might appear cautious, reserved, practical, and serious.

If your ascendant is an air sign (Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius), you might appear sociable, friendly, and communicative.

If your ascendant is a water sign (Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces), you might appear emotional, intuitive, and sensitive.

Your Moon Sign

Often referred to as your “Shadow Side” your moon sign rules over your emotional and intimate side. This sign influences how you process emotions and feelings. The Moon rules your “desires and emotions, our memories — all that we keep internalized and do not show to others,” and even our subconscious mind.

Bonus: The Natal Chart

In your natal chart you also will learn about the 8 other planets represented in your chart : Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto. Along with Aspects; the angles between the different planets, Houses; which concern the areas of life in which the planets & signs operate and more.

Astrology is so much more than the daily horoscope you read in the newspaper. Personally, astrology allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of myself and how I am interconnected with both the planet and universe. I recommend learning about yourself because self awareness leads to more happiness and personal acceptance.
