Maggie Caneng ’14

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oxy chapter.

Meet this week’s Campus Celebrity that no one (or so she claims) knows, but who is making a positive difference both on and off campus every single day. Maggie Caneng is a fierce advocate for the causes that she believes in. If the phrase “walking the walk” were to apply to anyone, Maggie would be that person. Beyond being an incredible role model, Maggie is incredibly sweet, and wants the best for everyone that she knows. Read on to get to know more about Maggie! Note: author comments are italicized.

Name: Maggie F Caneng
Hometown: Cerritos, CA
Year: 2014
Major: CTSJ
On-Campus Activities: Besides being a BAMF? juuuust kidding. I’m the president of Vote For Equality this year, I work at the Child Development Center, and I am trying out Dance Production- trying is the key word.
Off-Campus Activities: I am currently being trained to be a Violence Prevention Specialist by Peace Over Violence, I guess VFE still counts as off campus, and I work as a swim instructor in Cerritos. I included my jobs to 1) brag about my suga mama status (writer’s input: Maggie is incredibly giving and generous. By “suga mama” status she means that beyond donating a TON of her time to the organizations that she supports/leads, she also donates fiscally.) and 2) because they’re things I’d probably do for free. (writer’s input: This is totally true. Maggie puts 100% effort into everything that she does – and that is because she truly cares about all of her activities. As her quadmate, I will comment that no one who isn’t totally dedicated would stay up until 6:00 am doing homework like Maggie does.)

What do you want to do when you graduate?: Travel and get up to crazy shenanigans. And change the world, obviously.

Tell HerCampus readers why VFE is so important to you: It’s a genuine outlet and resource for the WHOLE community to create change both personally and interpersonally. To me VFE works within the framework of serving everyone, one-on-one, which is so vital and grossly neglected in social action and in every day life in general.

Share a few fun facts about each of the organizations that you work for: Peace Over Violence is one of the only organizations of its kind in the world that has services for deaf, disabled, and elderly people. For those of you who don’t know what Peace Over Violence is, it is definitely worth checking out their website (http://peaceoverviolence.org/) to learn more about a really awesome organization.

Where do you see yourself in five years: I know that I want to be happy making others happy, but I truly hope that I would have grown and explored so much of what life has to offer that I can’t even imagine right now what I’ll be doing, where, with who, and who I’ll be. This is why Maggie is someone that everyone on campus should get to know. She is constantly learning, growing, and leading in an incredibly positive way, and I personally really appreciate her bright outlook on life.

Describe a Maggie(d) world. What does it include? What doesn’t it include?: In a Maggie world no one feels alone or without an ally or friend. It doesn’t include any -ism/-phobia/etc which creates violent divisions or isolation within community. Basically people would sincerely give a damn about each other and other beings contingent on the actions of humans.
