LA Music Scene: Coachella on a College Budget

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oxy chapter.

With the Coachella lineup being recently released, we thought it might be a good idea to talk about the 3-day music festival that is intrinsic of the California music experience. Although this year there will not be hologram Tupac, there are countless other artists that are going to make the festival incredible and entirely worthwhile. In case some of you haven’t had a chance to look at this year’s lineup, here it is in all of its musically diverse glory:

Sounds great right? That is enough to convince almost anyone to want to go, the only problem being how can you afford it in the event that begging your parents doesn’t work out the way you had hoped. Luckily, there are some ways to cut back the overall cost of the Coachella experience without cutting back on the experience itself.

1. Go Camping
Camping is much more affordable than staying in a motel or a hotel during Coachella weekend. Hotels cost upwards of $350 per night and they often require a three-night minimum for the weekend, bringing your lodging total nearly up to $1,000. No matter how many people you cram into that tiny room, they are still paying over $100, not to mention the cost of shuttles from the hotel to the festival. Camping spaces on the other hand cost only $85 per night and you get to camp right on the festival grounds. You may end the weekend a bit dirty, but by then no one will either notice or care.

2. Invest in a Camelbak
You will get thirsty walking from stage to stage all day long, and disposable water bottles are extremely pricey within the venue. Camelbaks come in handy because not only can you use it to store important things like your money and ID, but there are free water filling stations scattered across Coachella. Here is an example of a Camelbak that is on sale.

3. Pack Food and Drinks
During music festivals it is extremely tempting to buy a large pizza or call room service and have your meals delivered to you. However, eating out for every meal is a money vacuum. Before you leave, take a trip to the store and stock up on whatever food and drinks you’re planning to consume over the weekend. There will definitely be times where nothing in the world will satisfy you except Chipotle, but at least for the times when you just need to snack or eat a light breakfast you will be covered.
