Hungry? Easy Dorm Room Snacks

This article is written by a student writer from the Her Campus at Oxy chapter.

We’re back at school and all I can think about is how much I dread standing in the long lines for food, especially when I’m the first one in line at home. At Oxy, the Marketplace usually closes at 7:30 pm and then it’s off to the Cooler anytime after that. There’s a pretty good selection of things to eat here at school, but let’s face it…there’s nothing better than food from home. But it’s even worse when you’re having those cravings late at night and nothing is open! ): Here’s some cheers to items to pack away in your dorm room that can be your way to get out of that emergency hunger pain.

The Wonders of Turkey and Cheese
Instead of that grilled cheese that you’re craving, grab a packet of your favorite deli meat (mine is turkey!) and slices of cheese to roll together and munch on. If you happen to have a Panini press, with some greens and two pieces of wheat bread you got yourself another meal.

Who Doesn’t Like Nutella?
Some of my friends have stashes of nutella in their room that they love to eat with crackers or wheat thins and a small slice of a banana on top. It’s a serious treat and a great bite to eat.

Bye bye Frozen Yogurt
Yogurt Haven, Pinkberry and Yogurtland are within close proximity to the campus. But what’s a girl to do when all the stores are closed? Keep some Greek yogurt, fresh or frozen fruit in the fridge, and your favorite toppings (i.e. honey or chocolate sauce) on hand to combine together. How quick and easy!

Hooray for Frozen Fruit!
Currently I have some green grapes in the freezer that have not been disappointing these past couple of nights. Raspberries and blueberries are great too and come together in the grocery store, so you won’t need to buy them separately.

Popcorn is Not Just for the Movie Theatre
My roommate has been kind enough to share many bags of popcorn with me during our late night homework sessions that definitely provided a lift in the mood every couple of hours. You can even add some M&M’s to satisfy your sweet tooth.

One word: Chocolate
I have nothing more to say. Milk, dark, white, you name it! Chocolate will be there for you. I always have candy left over from almost every holiday and it’s nice to sneak a few in class, especially when you’re feeling sleepy.

Oatmeal, what?
I was not a fan of oatmeal for a while, but I was soon converted once I realized its versatility. Add some milk, spices (cinnamon, pumpkin spice), brown sugar, fruit, or nuts and it really does fill you up.

If these don’t work for you, whip out your chips, Eggos, Goldfish, microwaveable meals, and ramen; the list can go on and on! Just remember that it’s okay to have your favorite snack on hand because it’s never good to deprive yourself of a good thing. You never know, it can serve to motivate you to finish that presentation for your class; once you’ve finished it, you can reward yourself with a snack that smiles back…and it does not have to be Goldfish (:

What are your on-call snacks?
