‘Tis the season—no, not Christmas. It’s almost Halloween and it couldn’t possibly be more clear in my house. There are little decorations everywhere; stuffed gnomes dressed as vampires, little light-up pumpkins, and even a Hello Kitty Squishmallow that looks like Frankenstein. With all these little reminders, I got to thinking… What do I do to celebrate such a fun, lighthearted holiday? Well, I…
Go to Haunted Houses
This is probably my favorite Halloween activity. The month of October rolls around and I immediately begin my search for the best haunted house out there. Since I’ve been in college the last few years, my personal favorite has been Frightmare Farms. There are four total attractions, with one haunted hayride and three houses, and they’re all fantastic. I love going with my best friends and sharing the experience with them, and so far, none of us have been disappointed.
Watch Scary Movies
Admittedly this is one of the activities I do a little less than the others, but I do love a good scary movie. Being able to watch them with my friends and poke fun at the absurdity of horror movies is almost as fun as being scared by them. This isn’t to mention all the Halloween-themed treats that come along with watching these movies at home. It’s a fun and simple way to wind down after a long week.
Pick Up “Darker” Books
Speaking of winding down, horror and thriller books are coming out at astonishing rates. There are so many to choose from, it can be hard to decide which book I’m in the mood to read. Currently, I’m reading Leigh Bardugo’s “Ninth House”, a dark academia set at Yale, and Bret Eastman Ellis’ infamous “American Psycho”. Both are very different, but still manage to have the same general vibe that makes them perfect for the fall / Halloween season.
Spend More Time Outside
So this is probably an unpopular opinion, but the Halloween season is my absolute favorite to spend outside. The leaves are changing colors, the cozy sweaters are at their prime wearing-time, and the air is crisp for the entire day. I adore going outside to hike, apple pick, or simply exist. Everything about being outside during this time is beautiful to me, and I can’t wait to experience it more this year.
Halloween is one of my favorite times of the year. The general vibe of the holiday as well as the weather and experiences that come with it make it really memorable for me. With a hot apple cider in hand, I’m excited to continue carrying out these personal routines for years to come.
